I can't offer myself for vassal

Hello everyone,
I'm new to this site and been into Civilization IV for about 5 months now. I recently got the great expansion, Beyond the Sword. But, I have one problem. When the option of vassalage is available, I can't offer myself to be a vassal state of anyone, Only the computer players can offer themselves as vassal states to me. And I know that it is possible to offer yourself for vassal, because I saw a screenshot on this site from the Warlords expansion, that showed that you can offer yourself for vassal. If anyone can help me, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

It's not possible. You might be able to mod it in, but that would require significant game changes.

That´s strange, as far as I know you can offer to be a vassal to another human player in multiplayer mode. But perhaps single- and multiplayer are different cases.

the game is coded in a way that disallows human to AI vassalizing. you can mod it in but the AI is not coded to cope with this well so you'd have to alter the code quite extensively to ensure balanced game play.

What's the difference with an AI vassal to an AI?

There is no real difference - but the human player can exploit the system as it is in ways that are not open to the AI. I could basically force a powerful AI into a Defensive Pact just because I want not because the AI has anything to gain from it...
