:goodjob: I always hated having to ring a whole continent with ships to get advance warning. That there was no auto recon for jets just sucked.
I finally fixed it.
Power bar utility.
It has a superunit mode. If you check that you can recon and the uncovered area will stay just that pemanently. An uncovered and visible area.
It's a beautiful thing not to have 50 battleships and 30 aigis cruisers that never even get to fight. Just sittin in the ocean like sea police.
So, when I get to rocketry, I pop in powerbar. Recon my outside borders and then turn it off.
I'm lovin it.

Imagine if the US felt like that. Aaw... Just let em come on in. We'll kill the russians and chinese "after" they get to washington. We're not scuured of a few million heavily armed troops.

I don't think that's a good comparison CivSlayer.

In RL, you would have some of the best military minds coordinating a massive, full scale invasion.

In civ terms, that means the ai drops off a couple cav and a couple infantry. MAYBE a couple tanks.

By that time, your empire should be fully RR'ed. Since the ai uses up their movement points landing the units, they're sitting ducks for the arty/cavs you should have hanging around for 'homeland defense'.

Don't get me wrong, if it makes the game more fun to you, then all the power to ya. ;)

I have had an AI drop of 12 knights on the same square (in the Middle ages) before. Don't underestimate the AI. It can surprise you sometimes. (And by the way, it took me a few seconds to realize that "ai" was "AI" )

So...your solutions to the game's problem is to cheat...?

But I agree in a way that the mechanics are very flawed. Mixing the technical convenience of fortification with the gameplay advantage really isn't right. It's like reasearching a Tech that makes the game fonts easier to read.

Huh? What I did was improve the game fo myself. I believed that there should have been an outo recon and created it since it wasn't available.
When playing high difficulties against 12-16 other civs, you want to know when (after a war is started) a fleet of carriers, battleships, transports and subs are coming your way. Usually I'm fighting off several nations. If I need to reposition troops quickly it's best to get at least one turn warning. Otherwise I end up losing buildings from bombardment and having troops land in my country from several locations.
IMHO it should be that way already. What nation does not patrol it's borders via aircraft?
On top of that I only play huge customized games. In my mods subs carry up to 6 marines, aigis cruisers are stronger than battleships but have less range. And carriers hold 6 aircraft. Also modern paratroopers are invisible.
It's all designed to entertain and challeng me alone.
I thought that was one of the reasons the game is modable.

Yes, but it's a game. The only time i ever use recon is if there's nothing else for my planes to do, so I just have them check stuff out. Otherwise, it's pretty useless
My point exactly. Why should any function, unit or game mechanism be usless?
If it's useless then it should be corrected. If not by the designers then do it yourself. Otherwise it's like playing poker with a 47 card deck cuz you threw out the rest of the cards.

If I am reading this right all CivSlayer did was set up a button for jets to recon the same location every turn. I wouldn't consider this cheating, just a time saver. I always wondered why this wasn't in the game, along with setting waypoints for units for patrolling....

Question: Why are you worrying about your homeland? In my wars, I stay on the offensive, making it impossible for the enemy to launcch a strike against me. If I get into a war where I can't do that, I eather get peace, or get onto the offensive as soon as possible. Defensive wars are just a waste of time and money.

Exactly Paradigne. Saves time and money. Now I keep my ships closer to home and send them out to meet the enemy when necessary.

That idea of way points is great. I was wondering also.
Hmmm. how do we solve that one? I would love to see a march of troops circling key areas and patrolling borders.
Any ideas anyone?
