I found some fatty substance in my lawn while I was mowing it

Eat it, then take pics of what it looks like when it comes out the basement. Only then will I be able to make a reasonably accurate prediction as to what the substance is. For now, I am forced to conclude that it is leftovers from an alien's lunch.

Although what I would wonder if I were you is what is causing huge clumps of mold to grow in my lawn in the first place.

Looks like chicken to me... maybe someone was grilling and chucked the burnt ones into your yard. I've tossed tons of crap into my neighbor's yard.
