Caveman2cosmos should not be started from ingame, but from its own shortcut. The shortcut may need to be corrected for steam install's location. Also, have you manually applied the 3.19 patch? I believe the steam patcher doesn't do so properly.

no i havent i thought steam does it all sorry..do you have a link for this patch and how should i make this shortcut, its funny cause all the other mods in the BTS work fine...TY

The shortcut is already in the mod folder, but it probably points to C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Civilization 4\Beyond The Sword\Civ4BeyondSword.exe, or whatever the default install path is. You need to change that to point wherever Steam installed C4, but keep the bit at the end about mod=Caveman2Cosmos or whatever. Posting from my phone so path names may be wrong, but that's the general idea.

ok heres what i got when i put the 3.19 patch in... do i have a bad cosmos file??? what is a good link for that i super appreciate your help i really want to play this..

As a steam user myself all I had to do was redirect the shortcut to where steam installed it, but I have Steam installed outside of Program Files due to Window's UAC being notorious for fouling modding up. The Steam version of the Complete Civilisatiion IV should already be patch 3.19, it certainly was for me.

For me my install path is this: C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV Beyond the Sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Caveman2Cosmos.

If you have installed Steam in the default location (ie inside Program Files) you can move it following these steps here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129

You can check which version of Beyond the Sword you have by loading up Beyond the Sword, Selecting Advanced from the Main Menu and then selecting About This Build, if it says Version : 319 then you are good to go.

Right, the mod must be run either as an administrator, or the game installed somewhere other than Program Files, because it needs access to modify multiple files in the mod folder itself. Also, the mod folder cannot be renamed, it must be named "Caveman2Cosmos" or various other errors will come up. Also, is that error popping up when you try to run the game from the C2C shortcut, or when you try to install the patch, or what?

That said, I've been using a set of ISOs I scanned from my own discs long, long ago, so I can't really offer much help with Steam installations.

I don't have the Steam version but I do seem to remember that the Steam version 3.19 is different from the civfanatics version 3.19 . So the patch must be run at all times.

Really? How is it different? Caveman2Cosmos seems to work just fine on my computer - I get the occasional MAF crash after a few hours play but I assume that's a consequence of using a Gigantic Map Script.

Are you running the game as Admin? This is a must. Once it goes thru the loading process it will disappear from your screen. Do Not Panic! It will take several minutes for a 1st time load because of the amount of data that must be placed. Once it has loaded you will see the Caveman2Cosmos splash screen. Proceed from there.

Yes, using Gigantic Map (which we no longer support) will eventually cause MAFs. To cut down on them Save on a regular basis and after an hour or 2 of play save and exit to desktop. Then reload. This seems to ease the "burden" of the cache and save game files. Also once out to desktop go into the Save folder and reduce the number of saves located in it. We once had a problem iirc that if you went over 80 saves it also could cause the Civ IV engine of the game problems. Also reduce the Autosave saves to 5. Just little tips to keep this old game running longer.

Thanks for the tips, I already had the Autosave settings on 5 (that appears to be default as I never changed that) and I will now more regularly clear out my Save Folder, I do have a tendancy to save very often anyway (a holdover from playing modded Elder Scroll games and their tendancy to crash at most inopportune times)

PerfectMongoose at Gigantic does created awesomely pretty maps with varied and natural looking terrains :)
