I just lost a lot of files.

The odd thing though is I rebooted and now they're suddenly working. The exact same ones and I'm not joking.

That sounds to me to like your drive is starting to fail. Expect that things will get worse

Chances are very, very good that most of the stuff isn't important, just throw everything away.

Seriously, 90%+ of my media space is taken up by pirated material, take that away, and I could fit everything on a couple usb keys.

Same here!

OK, so I've got every disc working now, I found that program I was looking for.

Now other things. First thing, I noticed the drive has been rattling quite a bit. Not just with the old CD-Rs but even commercially pressed ones, or recent DVD-Rs.

Second thing is, I've noticed there's been quite a few coasters. Now, usually, it's the DVD-R brand, but I never had trouble with any of them on my XP box. (It's a big spindle, maybe 100, the only thing I really use them for is Petty stuff or the occasional backup or burning Linux images).

I'm gonna see if I can find that lens cleaner disc thingy I had, if not, will have to wait till the next paycheck. maybe that will help some. Also gonna check to see if any screws are loose or anything.

The good thing, I do have a backup DVD drive under my bed, my mom bought it at a yard sale for $10.
