Further to my 'Laptop Civing' thread, I've been playing on the Classic version for about a week now and have noticed some SHOCKING developments from an MGEers perspective:

-The AI's are NICE! They trade tech! They can stay 'Enthusiastic' or 'receptive' in an alliance! They don't go from 'Uncooperative, Peace' one turn to 'Hostile, Peace' the next automatically! Canute is not the jerk I've always thought he was, as we have stayed allied with NO demands for tribute for over 2000 years now!

I'm really enjoying this!

Really!? I've heard that, but never tried Classic. Have you noticed any other differences? I'm an MGE player, too... but maybe I'll try to find a copy of Classic if it is a different enough experience. Once we buy one version, they should include the other, lesser versions too

Yeah! Try and get one. They go for about 10 bucks on the back shelves of your larger electronics stores

There are other differences that I've noticed, but most of them are graphic (there is a much more detailed explanation of the tech you just got, along with a little graphic, for instance) but I think that's a PC/Mac difference. Classic, of course, is missing the MP option.

But yeah, the AI is much easier to get along with. I was playing on Deity when I enjoyed that alliance with Canute (and a simultaneous one with Abe Lincoln, before they got slaughtered by the Greeks), which really says something. Only two or three sneak attacks on a crowded little continent by the year 1500.

I have noticed that on MGE the AI run Civs are MUCH nicer when you are playing in multiplayer mode. In singleplayer mode they always hate you after one turn no matter what.

I have a patch on my site to change MGE to Fantastic Worlds, which has the same "nice" AI as Classic

Hey Cedric, does your patch work with my Mac? I think the programming is the same (rules.txt, game.txt etc.) so it should, right?

It should not, since the underlying code and compilation are different! Always match a patch to your specific platform (PC, MAC, Linux) and game version (Classic, FW, MGE). Dont use a PC patch on a MAC, LOL!

i´ve never played mge.

i´ve downloaded the classic to mge patch but i can´t use it because my cd is scratched. does anyone now a non cd crack for mge that works. i have already downloaded two that didn´t work.

Classic is very good I know...

I still play most SPG on it.

The most interesting feature is the attitude of the AI civs which is not always uncooperative or hostile like in MGE.
BTW do you think that's an MGE bug?

Being a "Classic" player, I've only ever known the nicer AI version. However, I just bought MGE off of eBay ($9.00) and I am eager to see how the AI works.

Actually, in my classic version, I get frustrated that I can't get the dopey AI's to declare war on me in some cases. That's probably one case where it would be helpful to have a very agressive AI.

I prefer clasic because in clasic it is all about finesse. I used to play multiplayer but I got tired of it because it is all about more! more! more! no other strategy realy. It just got old.

I still don't know whether the classic AI is smart or not. Actually, I'd rather think it's superior to hippos IQ so that may explain his statement

I've always played classic and well, unless you call AI cheating "smart"...

See, nowhere in my statements do I compliment the AI for it's great intelligence. No, see, I use the word 'nice', but never the word 'smart'. The mongolian definition of which defines one who can build up the largest stockpile of catapults and stick them in fortresses around Karakorum

I went straight from Civ I to MGE.

Maybe I will have to try classic.
