I got my brand new Dell PIII-700 laptop last week with Win 2k and so far I got the Microsoft OS severely crash 9 times (I didn't include the "light" crashes). What do I mean by severe? Well even when I press the power button, it doesn't turn off the machine so I had to unplug the electrical plug AND the batteries. Annoying.

Anyway, for those who don't understand the thread ironic smily, it's my private way to joke with a certain Dell staff who's also CFC staff... <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif" border=0>
Coooorn, where are you? <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/biggrin.gif" border=0> Got some matter to discuss for you.

And oops I forgot to tell the morale of the story: there's a long way for win2k to catch OS X. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/tongue.gif" border=0>
(the second morale could be don't buy certain laptops but it would be unfair to judge them, since the OS is the main guilty!) <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/smile.gif" border=0>

Added if you still wonder: NO, I didn't buy it, my office bought it for me. For a "professional" use so. That's theory of course! In fact so far, the on 8 gig HD, there are only 1gig free (4gig of stuffs downloaded from hotline)

Hey I don't make the damn things.....I just support them. And I'm not even a Laptop Tech, or a Win2k Tech. I'm a DOS, WIN3.1/95/98/ME, destop technician.

But what are your symptoms?? I'm sure I can help.
And when you say severe do you mean a lockup? Blue screen? Or a reboot?

Niet, no blue screen, it just locks up. The mouse doesn't respond, nor the taskbar. Really strange. But well, I think I'll have to get used with, it's less annoying than win98 blue screens, so I think I should find myself lucky.

Well Dell shouldn't have sold a laptop that crashes that often. Parts also cause problems, and Dell could have picked better parts in this case.

it's probly because it's a laptop

i wouldn't touch a laptop with a ten foot pole

and personaly i dunno why the heck i would even want a laptop.. but i can see why if your job gives you one

Oh Fishhead, at last you're going on the sea surface again
smile.gif
Glad to see you.

Well, when you've got some simulators running and you constantly have to wander between your desk and the labs, I can tell you nothing's more useful than a laptop. BTW, it's quite heating, especially when you don't put it several inches above the table... It burnt my hand once so now I'm always putting something under to get it higher on the desk.
PaleHorse, you're quite right. I think the ATI drivers are not a stability reference! They've always got troubles with their drivers (especially for my All-in-Wonder at home in France). Fortunately they're doing fine for macs (99% of the macs graph cards = ati)

Well neither do I. I do the OT, Tech support, other games, feedback, staff

, And quickly go through Civ 2 and 3.

As for your video card drivers......I'll see what I can find. Do you have your Service Tag??? Or the model number? That would really help me out. (Although European service tags don't work in my system.....so model number will have to do.)

Greetings Corn,
finally I'm back from France. Good to be on the forum all the day again... ooops, I meant at work again
biggrin.gif

Anyway, since I didn't know what's a tag is, I looked at the bottom of it. Could see something like Service Tag number. Supposed that was it. We'll see that in PMs. For the "sweets" I got for you from France too
wink.gif

Anyway, it seems that the crash is actually caused by a resident. I think Yahoo Messenger
mad.gif
I'll try to uninstall it, since I've got now MSN messenger too and it seems to work like a charm (first time for a Microsoft soft...

) Thanks anyway.
