Yes, it's shallow. Yes, it may be unthematic to certain countries, but why for the love of god if I want to be India or Rome in MP to I have to be flamboyant pink?

There should be a dropdown menu in the lobby allowing you to choose your border colors -- hell, take it a step further and allow each user to customize their own flag using presets if you want to.

That's actually quite a cool idea. I mean, historically it kinda screws with stuff, but for multiplayer when your leader and civ name is already custom why shouldn't they let you have custom colours and a flag too. They'd need to make sure two civs are not too similar, but that can probably be calculated programatically.

Make sure the flag can only be generated from a preapproved selection of logos and shapes (anyone who's played guild wars will understand what I'm going for there) to stop anyone being stupid with it.

Could always have a checkbox that says "allow custom civilization colours" in the games for people who don't like using them too, so best of both worlds.

agree with you both i like setting up my own scenarios and thes nothing great and menacing about destroying the pink post nuclear facists while wearing your sea green camos!

but seriously i like Tamed idea would be great to help set the right tone in game

Totally agree. In a custom game you should be able to select not only your own color but those of your AI opponents as well. I don't like having 5 opponents with what is essentially different shades of blue.

It is relatively easy to change each player's culture color in Worldbuilder files in Civ IV. Since we can probably expect to have at least as much moddability in V, there should be no problem.

i honestly can't believe that this feature has been left out of civ games so far. its such a simple and basic thing, and the player shouldn't have to edit game files to do it.

every civ has a "base" colour, and players could change it if they don't like it.

It wouldn't be hard for Firaxis to make this change. They may be concerned about offering too many options, but this one is so simple and could really make you feel like your empire represents you. It drives me crazy how Germany is always white and so hard to see. This is a great suggestion.

how do you change player colour in world builder?

how do you change player colour in world builder?

Open up the Worldbuilder file you wish to play in a text file. Ctrl+F "BeginPlayer" to get to the section that lists all the players. Scroll down until you find the leader whose color you wish to change. One of the attributes listed is "Color". Replace everything after PLAYERCOLOR_ with one of the following codes (except the stuff in parentheses; that's just to show which empire has that color by default):

BLUE (This is the default color for America)
LIGHT_GREEN (Default color for Arabia)
GREEN (Aztec)
MIDDLE_PURPLE (Babylon)
DARK_GRAY (Byzantium)
ORANGE (Carthage)
LIGHT_ORANGE (Celtia)
DARK_PINK (China)
YELLOW (Egypt)
WHITE (England)
MIDDLE_GREEN (Ethiopia)
DARK_BLUE (France)
GRAY (Germany)
LIGHT_BLUE (Greece)
DARK_LEMON (Holy Rome)
DARK_YELLOW (Inca)
PURPLE (India)
RED (Japan)
MIDDLE_BLUE (Khmer)
DARK_CYAN (Korea)
PEACH (Mali)
MIDDLE_CYAN (Maya)
BROWN (Mongolia)
LIGHT_BROWN (Native America)
DARK_ORANGE (Netherlands)
DARK_GREEN (Ottomans)
CYAN (Persia)
DARK_DARK_GREEN (Portugal)
DARK_PURPLE (Rome)
DARK_RED (Russia)
PINK (Spain)
DARK_INDIGO (Sumeria)
LIGHT_PURPLE (Vikings)
LIGHT_YELLOW (Zululand)

I WOULD agree with the OP except for one detail: You learn to recognize civs by their color. In CtP it didn't matter because there was no difference between civs at all. However, when you have Civ III and Civ IV (and now Civ V) the civilizations are quite different; thus, it would be valuable to be able to instantly recognize any civ at any time. Espcially in MP when you conceivably would have several games going at once..."Was india green or yellow in this game, and did they have the shield or the dragon for their flag?"

In theory, great idea. But it would have some problems.

I've actually seen someone do this in multiplayer. I couldn't figure out how but he managed to switch the colors for Zulu so the black and yellow were reversed for unit colors. If I recall the borders were still yellow though.

Make it a check box just like unrestricted leaders. ;)

While we're on the subject, can we get customizable patterns in addition to border colours? Have some compassion for the colourblind folks out there. Stripes, chevrons, circles, triangles are vastly more recognizable than subtle shades of green and red.

And put a large flag of each Civ right above each unit.

Well girls i hope Sid grants youre decorating wishes.

I agree 100%. On top of that, I want to be able to change the other civs' color display in game at will as well. Depending on which AI's are drawn, it's not uncommon to have civ's sharing borders and have their culture colors almost the same. This situation really diminishes the value of the mini-map.
