I want to pick my border colors.

I agree 100%. On top of that, I want to be able to change the other civs' color display in game at will as well. Depending on which AI's are drawn, it's not uncommon to have civ's sharing borders and have their culture colors almost the same. This situation really diminishes the value of the mini-map.

Too true...I once played a game as Bismark and had Victoria bordering most of my nation. It was absolutely impossible to tell which was which on the minimap as my nation was all lit due to LoS (and thus a bit whiter than normal) and hers wasn't (and was thus a little greyer than normal).

I agree, that drives me nuts. More than once i've 3 or 4 civs of very similar colors all next to each other. I want a USEFUL mini map.

I doubt Firaxis will do it this way, but my solution would be to give each civ a "preferred" color. The color an AI civ actually got would be a compromise between the preferred color and making each color distinct. And of course colors that are too close to terrain/water colors would be avoided.

I don't see why humans shouldn't get to pick their own color, especially useful for those with some sort of color blindness. But again at least in MP colors that match the terrain should be forbidden.

I'm not impressed with the skinny little border on the screenshots. Hopefully they will beef that up before the release.

I used to actually edit my XML files to get colors I liked, but that got old after a while.

I think there's two issues here. More important than being able to customize colors, IMO, is that in any given game each civ's borders and units are clearly distinguishable.

But if I could easily pick colors for different civs I'd do it. If nothing else to get rid of those nauseating pastels they chose for Arabia, Babylon, and Spain.

True, duckstab, editting the XML file does the job. However exiting the game, editing the XML then relaunching the game is a PITA. It aught to be doable at runtime.

This is actually a cool idea. I would play as orange each and every game. :D

This should be an option in diplomacy. No player is allowed to use the borders of another civ, but can trade for the border color. Spies can be used to force a civ to use another border color so that the player can take over their original color...

I'm kidding...

No. No.
I like this idea.
Wars have been fought for less.

Plus it invalidates the checksum or whatever mechanism BUFFY uses to detect modified assets. If you're playing a HOF game I think you're stuck with the original colors.

I don't care about the pink (I'm not homophobic). I just played a game as china, which is purple (the official gay color), but that doesn't bother me.

What does bother me is when the people on your border are as similar color. It makes things harder to tell apart.

I'm not homophobic either, I just don't like pastels.

Of course the Roman uu easily makes up for any border color they have. In fact, I think that's how Firaxis balanced the overpowered Praet UU. By making their borders pink so the human won't play Rome. Didn't work, I still play them fairly frequently.

I like the Purple. Very 'royal'.

To be honest, I don't care about this matter not that much, but It seems very easy to do it.
So, Firaxis, Show your decorating skill ;)
Similar colors are just a pain. Please use more various colors.

You could tweak the colors and possible get them a little better, but with the number of civs by BtS, and the approach that each civ gets an unchanging, unique color, there are bound to be a lot of very similar colors. There are very few (if any) better, more distinct colors they could have chosen.

I'm know, because i'm a graphic designer, and constantly work with colors.

The first thought that enters my mind when I see purple is 'royal. I dont see why people consider purple a gay color (I thought the 'color' rainbow was the gay color)

Yeah i agree i consider purple a royal color and rainbow (poor rainbow) the gay color:)

Actually, the one thing that always bugged me (in addition to the similar colors on the minimap) was the fact that the lines you drew on the map with the drawing tool are your civ's color as well. Some colors work really, but others (Mali's comes to mind, for instance) can be really hard to see.

(I do a lot of drawing on my Civ 4 maps to plan out cities, plot out invasion routes, etc.)
