I was defeated. But, how and by who?

I was a few turns away from victory and the Modern Aged ended. I got a pretty animated picture and then a defeated screen.
So, how was I defeated and by who? I don't see anything that tells me.

If the age ended, you lost due to score. The final screens show the legacy points of each leader.

I'll look more closely at the legacy points. I'm loading up the last autosave.
And It looks like Augustus won with a Geographic Society victory? Maybe? 18 points to my 17. The screen doesn't give any details. Just a bar graph with me in second.
I was 5 turns from Space and 1 capital from the Great Banker thing.
Is there a 'points' victory? I thought it was just the four. Does the age and when enough turns pass and you just count points?

If the age ended, you ran out of time. A victory condition doesn't increase the age progression, it just leads to immediate victory.

It seems Augustus beat you by one point! The score is the total of all your legacy points.

My first game ended the same way. I was literally on the turn I would have completed the world bank. Ran out of time. I had the highest score, though.

I've since won a cultural and military victory! Currently enjoying sovereign difficulty. Seems just about right for opponents to keep around the same score but I still win.

Nothing wrong with a score victory in Civ 7. I like that it can happen. In previous games it felt bad (and was overly long).
