I wonder if Terra map script is playable this time

Remember how in Civ 5 the Terra map was pretty frustrating?

It has one starting continent for civs and another empty one for supposedly colonizing and fighting over for.

Too bad the AI never even once in my plays expanded into that unexplored continent!

I hope the map returns and that AI loves to colonize more, hopefully there's some civics that encourage it, supposedly Victoria wants to colonize all over the place.

I want some colonial wars!

Yep, perfect example of why later expansions should matter. Even if an AI did expand to the other continent (I've had a few games where it managed to get there), there was the question of... why? Even as the player it is like, okay I can put some cities here or I could not put some cities here and be better off.

Also as a side note, it was hilariously fun to get to that other continent in Civ 5, because it would be covered in barbarians. With what we've seen so far of 6, barb swarms are even more active.

It was pretty disappointing, yeah. Colonies should be relatively profitable, or at least break even. I'd really like risk of revolution with that, too, but as long as we're wishing... :crazyeye:

I'm hoping the AI gets some love in that area too. Terra map scripts are awesome. I'm hoping that they add in the future that players can created oversea colonies like in civ 4. Add in what some mods did for civ 4 by adding a revolution system and I would be really happy. Though for a revolution system to work I believe every civ would need more then one leader to pick from at the start. I am more than willing to pay for a DLC that would adds oversea colonies and revolutions feature to civ 6 though if it not in the base game.

Hoping for some AI-love aswell, though i'm quite positive on this because of the rewritten code.

Yeah and they have hopefully learned about the mistakes AI makes in combat in Civ 5. :)

I will rather have AI spitting out cities everywhere than staying as a three-city empire.

For the player too it was always the best option to stay small in Civ 5..

The most annoying thing to me about Terra maps in Civ 5 was that the starting continent already had ALL the resources. The virgin continent(s) offered nothing new to go after. Let's hope they fix that this time.

Yeah I only really had fun with Terra playing as Polynesia and completely ignoring the original continent

It would be nice if they made it into kind of a mini scenerio and just made some minor gameplay tweaks for it so it's more realistic

agreed, Terra wasn't very good in Civ V because it was easier to conquer the resources you need than to settle a city on the other side of the map, also global happiness and overall game pace caused other issues, but having more unique resources, and more resources in general, with better pacing would help make games play out the way the map intends.

Exactly: there was no reason to go there.

In fact, I only played on a Terra map if I wanted to play a Domination game - all your opponents were conveniently crammed onto the same continent with you, easy to get at!

Terra maps were a fine example of multiple factors combining to make it more like a pangea game than anything else. In addition to the two points quoted above, Astronomy being so far back in the tech tree made it all but meaningless to expand into the unexplored continent. The AI and the human player had little reason to expand there given how late in the game ocean expansion came and how long it would take for new cities to contribute.

Couple of things have me optimistic this time round.

First is Celestial Navigation (I'm guessing this is the right tech) is only 3 techs away from the start. So you should be able to found cities on the undiscovered continent a lot quicker.

Second is the lack of science/social policy hits to expansion. If you can get those cities up quicker and they don't have an immediate negative impact it removes another barrier to overseas expansion.

Third one of the livestreamers (he did acknowledge limited sample size) indicated that strategic resources seemed rarer than in Civ5. Hopefully we see something similar playout in terms of lux seeding.

Coupled with the prominence of the continents mechanics in leader traits and unique units I'm optimistic that Terra maps will be better this time round.

I really wish that one version of the Domination victory that triggered a Win if one player gained a certain percentage of the world's tiles would come back. That one was great, and the "new" Domination victory that requires conquering capitals doesn't do enough to replace it. Terra maps were a perfect example of why that condition was effective at creating tension. If you didn't get over there and start grabbing tiles, someone else would and maybe even win the game.
