i5 vs i7?

I've been told that Civ V doesn't run that much better on an i5 processor than an i7. Is this true? It affects me as I'm in the market for a new laptop and anticipate much Civ V playing on it.

Did you mean that there was not that much difference between them? I think they are wrong. Any thing to speed up the processing is a plus. I don't have any i5's though. I have two i7's and would not get rid of them. The game still gets sluggish on huge maps after turn 400. Of course if you are just racking up civ5 time and don't mind waiting on the computer, then i5's will do just fine.

Depends on how you define "much".

Depending on the specific models you are comparing, a non ((U-)LV) laptop i5 will likely be only a few percent slower than an i7 in Civ5. On other applications the difference might be much bigger, though.

For a desktop i5/7 comparison, the difference will be even less, and almost non-existent between the faster i5s and and an i7.

For modern laptops, the thermal design is at least as important as the specs of CPU and GPU.
Especially those sleek thin ultrabooks have the nasty habit of throttling massively under sustained load.
Check reviews and custumer comments before buying.
