I'd like to play civ3: dunno how?!

Hello,

I bought Civ3 about 3 years ago. I started to play a bit but found it...well boring. So, I left it away....I have to say I never played turn-based games...so maybe this is why I can't find "the way" to love this kind of games...So actually I play Startcraft, a RTS game. I know its a old game, but at work at lunch time we play it and we love it! Anyway, I'd like to give another try with Civ3. So, is there a way to start playing this game (maybe some tips) so Ill become to like it? I

Firstly, you have to get used to the turn-based part of it, nyo. There are good and bad parts of that, nyo. Good is that you can have as much time as you want, bad is that things go slowly, nyo.

The thing I like most about it is that you can replay it and every time it's different, but I think the first thing is to understand the game features, nyo.

Starcraft was an great game. no reason why one would not like RTS/RPG and TBS. Most players play all types, well I can't play any 3D games (motion sickness).

There are lots of strategy threads here and forums like sucession games and GOTM. They have some detailed games that you could follow to see how others play.

When you see a 3+ year old game still has active fans sites, you can figure it is a decent game. That does not mean everyone will like it.

You don't have to play it if you don't like it. Civ is slow going, so that may not be suited for everyone.

Try playing a game at the hardest difficulty level on a tiny map and you'll see that it's not borring at all.

There are also some of us who play only one game.

You need quite a lot of patience for Civ, as games don't last half an hour, they last a week. You have to take time to play.

You can find many advice here on the strategy forum, there's even a tutorial (that really sucks, it always tells me to irrigate grassland). And with time, you'll learn the details.

The only thing I can add to what's been said here is that it took me about a year for the game to click with me. I played it a few times, got frustrated with it, and it sat for a long time before I picked it up again on a whim. Then, when my son came and told me he won a game, that was it! I had to figure this game out. Ever since I've had my ups and downs and have sworn I would quit playing then I come back in a couple days and go at it again. I've come to really appreciate the fact that it's turned based....RTS can be too quick to form a solid strategy for me, as everything is so fluid it's hard to keep track of everything. With turn-base I have time to think about what I want to do, and how best to go about doing it. I'm enjoying Civ and will keep playing as long as there is interest in it.



PS. Starcraft was an awesome game. I also enjoyed Age of Empires, and Warcraft III.

I did 31 civs on tiny on sid once and it was awesome until i got invaded by hordes of cavs and rifles
