I don't know if this possible but I have an idea of how to make religion act more realisitically.
Early religion were very centralised with countries/areas having their own unique religion, it was only mainly with the rise and fall of empires that other countries adopted the same religion. Later on there were missionaries actively spreading religion, but this came much later.
Is it possible for units built in a city with a temple to recieve a promotion (of that religion), which if that unit is stationed in another city there is a small chance (per turn) that the religion will spread to the city it is stationed in. This would work instead of religion spreading passively. This could also work with trade caravans etc spreading religion to other bordering countries. Or if you are stationing troops in friendly cities etc.
This would stop religion spreading huge distances as it now does, until later in the game when missionaries could be brought in later.
I hope this makes sense and would hopefully make for a more realistic spread of religion - if it is at all possible. (I got the idea from the plague promotion from 'fall from heaven' although this works differently).
