Idea: Great Prophet required to found a religion

Wait, would any random prophet found a religion? Shouldn't it be the actual ones that did it? Like Buddha for Buddhism, Confucius for Confucianism, Abraham for Judaism, and so on? I think that would make more sense. And would AAranda's religion mod be included? I think the most realistic thing would be that the prophets appeared in the correct year, and the correct civ, and founded it then. Of course that would be really complex and probably wouldn't work because some of those civs are only in the mega and not the RoM.

That might be easier for some religions than others. Buddha founding Buddhism might be fairly straightforward, but (for example) Abraham founding Judaism is less solid, and what about something like Hinduism, that didn't really have a set "founder?"

As it stands in Civ4, the religion mechanic is necessarily oversimplified to avoid making gameplay unnecessarily complex. some aspects are going to have to be representative, rather than realistic. I mean, if we're going to get down to brass tacks about "realism," when was the last time you saw a Jewish missionary? ;)

Why not a random prophet? Buddha might not appear until 2050 in the game, wouldn't someone else have "discovered" a very similar religion to Buddhism by then?

Eurebius World Religion - Revival mod had feature where great prophets founded religions. I didn't carry over that feature when I first time tweaked RoM's religions - can't remember if it required SDk changes... but if it did, those could be grabbed from its source files.

I remember looking at it when you first did the RoM religions changes also. I remember that the religion and disease spread were in python but not the GP stuff. Having religions founded by GP would certainly put a dent in my tactic of getting founding all the religions. but only if the AI knows about it.

...I think the most realistic thing would be that the prophets appeared in the correct year, and the correct civ, and founded it then....

How horrible. I don't want a sim! I have no problem in a religion requiring a climate/geography but why would the Egyptians who start in the antarctic region found a religion based on the monsoonal flooding of a river and not one based on cold winters and seafaring?

I like it too. ;)

Okay, so it's added to my modding todo list for 1.7. Here's the list (not in any particular order) so far:

  • It's the Economy, Stupid!
  • Fractional XP
  • Great Prophets Founding Religions
  • More AI tweaks?

Well, thanks to your help Afforess, we are now on the verge of a 100% working "Great Prophets Founding Religions" Mod ;).

Aussie.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I'm assuming this never made it into the last version of AND. Did anyone make a mod mod for it though?

Thanks, yes it was in C2C that first brought my attention to the idea. It seems to me that's how religions should be founded by default. But I was wondering if anyone had made a compatible plugin solely for AND 1.75c?

Why didnt this get implemented? Would be really nice to see "selectable option" to add this in the mod? Really like the idea!

I think some more buildings should enable priest specialists, if this is going to be the case. Sacrificial altar, for example.

Alternatively, the Folklore civic could incorporate a method of generating Great Prophet points by causing monuments to allow a priest specialist (under Folklore only), or simply making them directly generate Great Prophet points under Folklore.

i'm certainly all for this idea; it would give more choice to founding a religion;

I play using the limited religions option which means I can only found one religion - sometimes I want to found Christianity but wups, no one founded Buddhism so I get stuck with that instead.

I have been playing around with obsoleting religions when all the extras (AAranda's and more) are in play. It does not work. :( Even when I added in The_J's Real Favorite Religion mod, which spreads a religion to the capital of all leaders who has it as a favorite if they did not found it.

The AI seems to only accept and spread a religion if is their favorite. Rather than accepting any religion that comes along and using that until they can get their favorite. This seems to be how most humans also play based on this thread. So I think I will stop working on obsoleting at least for now. especially as I can't figure out how to make it work with "Choose Religions" or "Limited Religoins"

I am about 3/4 of the way through converting AAranda's religions and others to AND 1.76. It has some significant changes so that the religions are still majorly different i.e. each is equally OP in its own way, without being OP in the game.
