I'm only guessing what was in Sid's head when he designed it all, but I think I know why our caravans and diplomats have to make the trip. So the AI can see them coming and kill them first. I've only had that happen with caravans rarely, but I remember one game in particular where i was losing and I had to make peace fast with the computer. He killed my standard two diplomats near his cities. Then I quickly built a couple more, and while they were travelling, he killed them too. I forget the details, but I remember he kept kicking my butt all while I couldn't get to him to force a peace. That sticks way out in my head as to "why our diplomats have to make the trip."
Although I totally agree, it's very frustrating to have to bother with those details, and does not add much to the overall game experience.
