Heya Folks,

I'm looking for a list of major ideological movements throughout the last 3000 years that have diffused from nation to nation, civilization to civilization, changing the course of history. It's for a mod I'm working on (the one in my sig) that would create a new class of 'religions' in civ4 that would correspond to major philosophical and ideological movements throughout time. The rough list I have so far:

Ethical Monothieism
Monarchism
Feudalism
Confucianism
Divine Right
Nationalism
Marxism
Capitalism
Liberalism
Fundementalism
Facism
Globalism
Environmentalism

Keep in mind for your suggestions that I'm trying to keep the number of these movements to a minimum, and I've given them less than accurate names to keep things simple for myself.

Any help on this would be great!

Enlightened Despotism, perhaps?

Rational and authoritarian, the choice of progressive 18th c, European monarchs.

Don't forget that Democracy is as much an ideology as Communism or other forms of totalitarianism, that should be on the list as an option, surely.

Now I might be wrong on this one, so please correct me if need be. If you're capturing a scope of 3000 years, is it not the case that just about every monarch you care to include would also fall under the 'Divine Right' category as well as that of 'Monarchy'?

You could also break down these ideologies for the sake of your mod by having civ or culture group specific techs, which lead on to more subtle variations of these ideologies. For example, Free Trade was a highly contentious ideology within Capitalist ideology when it first raised its head (still is!). Major proponents of Free Trade were typically those powers with large empires within which to trade, whereas those without largely suffered in the face of such 'enlighted economic competition'. Obviously those without were not fans of this ideology at all.

Similarly, there have been so many variations upon Marxist ideology. If this has anything to do with the guerilla mod you mentioned, then options for the flavouring of civs are clearly available from the varied forms in which Marxist ideology expressed itself around the world.

And what units, improvements and abilities would that allow a player in Che's mod? :mischief:
Units? Red-eyed, bomb-throwing terrorists, of course! Or perhaps Dennis the Peasant...:mischief:

Thanks for the tips, folks. What I am trying to do with my mod is provide each 'improved' (not default) civic with a particular ideology to represent the sections of society that would prefer that civic. To make it more interactive, however, I also want to assign each ideology a secondary civic they prefer, and a civic that the ideology would be particularly opposed to. With that in mind, here's a list with each ideology thier first and second preferred civics in the first set of brackets, and the 'anti-civic' in the second set:

Ethical Monothieism (Organized Religion, Her. Rule) (Paganism)
Monarchism (Her. Rule, Vassalage) (Representation)
Feudalism (Feudalism, Vassalage) (Nationalism)
Confucianism (Beauracracy, Mercantilism) (Free Speech)
Divine Right (Theocracy, Caste System) (Free Religion)
Nationalism (Nationhood, Organized Religion) (Vassalage)
Marxism (State Property, Police State) (Free Market)
Capitalism (Free Market, Free Speech) (State Property)
Liberalism (Free Speech, Free Religion) (Police State)
Fundementalism (Theocracy, Police State) (Pacifism)
Facism (Police State, Nationhood)(Free Speech)
Globalism (Emancipation, Universal Sufferage) (Caste System)
Environmentalism (Environmentalism, Universal Sufferage) (Free Market)
Democratism (Universal Sufferage, Free Speech) (Police State)
Imperialism (Mercantilism, Organized Religion) (State Property)
Pacifism (Pacifism, Beauracracy) (Theocracy)
Despotism (Slavery, Despotism) (Serfdom)
Militarism (Vassalage, Mercantilism) (Free Speech)

I'd love any and all suggestions for better names or civics, but keep in mind each two preferred civics must be in different catagories, while the anti-civic must be in the same catagory as the most preferred.
