played several games now, and no matter what, the ai always wrecks me with ideology, causing me to get 40+ unhappiness, making end game totally unplayable, something needs to change

..or you need to build more culture buildings, and to pay close attention to which Ideologies the high-Tourism civilizations around you choose.

i dont care what ideology they chose, i dont want to switch, and thats that, switching and losing all my culture is just not an option, and i have built every building i possibly can in ever city and nothing is changing

You just need to put more effort into your culture or pick an ideology popular with the tourism giant of the game. Or get lots of surplus happiness from other sources to mitigate the ideological unhappiness.

If you're not going to build up culture to "shore up" your ideology, you need to kill people more quickly. That's all there is to it.

"Building every building" just isn't enough. Building culture yields are lower than they used to be, supplemented now with great works of literature, art and music. I'm not saying you need to go overboard every game with 20 great works, but there is a peaceful medium you can reach so the effects aren't so caustic.

If you refuse to change ideology, and you haven't invested enough into culture or tourism, what do you expect to happen?

Changing ideologies really isn't that painful, at least not as much as -40 happiness.

Remember, you could have done the same thing to thing to the AI.

If you have indeed built everything you can, does that mean all three guilds are staffed, and your museums and hermitage are filled with the proper bonuses, plus as many great works of writing/music as you've acquired? If you've done all that and are still getting crushed, well....

Yeah, just having an amphitheatre in every city won't help. You really need to invest something in your culture to avoid being trampled by a tourism powerhouse, or be prepared to blast heavy cultures away from the face of the earth. If they're overtaking your culture, you have three options: produce more culture yourself, fight them off or change your ideology. Simple as that.

There's a few possibilities for you

1) You're technologically on par, at which point, you gain access to ideologies more or less on par with everyone else. You should have ample warning where the wind is blowing

2) You're behind and is a late comer to ideologies, at which point you should KNOW exactly what the high tourism Civs have picked as their ideology and there's no need to 'switch' you simply pick the one the high tourism/influence Civs have already picked

3) You're technologically superior, which means you're the first mover and blindly unlocked your preferred ideology without knowing what the AI will chose (this happened to me on my first game when I didn't really understand the mechanic) so I got a happiness penalty. But because I'm technologically ahead, I hit up hotels and archaeology before the AI and evened out the playing field by culture spamming/tourism spam. I also played the International Games (global wonder) project and got a massive tourism boost there.

There's really very little reason for you to be blindsided by this if you know the mechanic exists.

You don't need to be dominating culturally, just to be on-par with the major influence in your region. And in my last game, none of the AI bothered with tourism so it was easy for me to not have to worry about it too much. Top tourism AI was around ~55 at industrial, not hard at all to match and exceed that.

Also don't forget the tourism modifiers! Don't accept open borders from that big tourism bully (unless you're a bigger tourism bully, of course!). Try not to share their religion. Don't trade with them if possible. If they're autocrats and using Cult of Personality, don't wage war against their enemies. And so on. Always bear in mind what modifiers they may have against you!

is there a game option i can set at start to disable the unhappyness?

none of the solutions sofar are doing anything

Another possibility, if you have a number of city state allies and can bribe a few AIs, is to try to get your ideology declared the World Ideology. This should bolster your stability by improving public opinion and pressuring other civs.

was playing a co-op game, attacking them is out of the question, we went ahead and quit again, this happens every time

cant play cooperatively in this game, so i guess we will just play something else

IIRC, switching ideology doesn't mean you lose all your tenets - you get to pick new ones of the new ideology, just not as many as you had before.

even if i wanted to do that, which i dont, i lose my specialist bonuses, im never going to do that, the last game i played was co-op the last two before that were single player, each time, 50 unhappiness, no matter how much i focus on culture and tourism. the ai always gets hundreds of it and i always linger just south of 40 in tourism, hell the first gamei played i had hundreds of culture per turn, but i was STILL getting dominated by the ai influence

Do some people truly believe one should play a game and have no consequences? This advice in this thread is good.
