Idiot mistakes 101

built all coal plant, hydro plant and nuclear plant in a single city.
actually one of them is enough for generating power.

I'm such an idiot:

a) Accidentially selecting defending units, and pressing "F" to make sure they are fortified, just to learn that "F" means "wake up" if a unit is already fortified - easy way to loose 25% defence bonus for the next 5 turns :-|

b) Shift-clicking units thinking shift-clicking works the "windows way" (selecting from a to b) - with unpredictable results.

c) Thinking that the built-in intel graphics adapter on a recently purchased laptop would be sufficient to play civilization (duh)

d) accidentially hitting the windows key when aiming for the alt key (WTH! is this desktop doing here! - oh - windows key blunder, gottta alt-tab, phew)

[near noob warning]

Abandoning your usual culture/let's-get-along approach, and playing as Alexander of Greece, and then high-tailing it for all the Militaristic techs and ignoring happiness.

Growing your cities like mad ... and then wondering why your cities are getting unhappy, and noticing you can't build temples or libraries or anything that increases happiness.

Learning that in order to build temples, you first have to HAVE a religion, which means you have to found it [or get it spread to you, which hasn't happened in my game as of 1000 A.D.].

Priceless.

On that note, accepting every new civic that the advisors ask you about.

accepting serfdom with Feudalism as proposed by the advisor, when you actually could switch to both serfdom and vassalage. D'oh !:mischief:

NOT switching to Slavery as soon as it become avalible.

This is about to cost me the Christian Holy City. Basically I Oracle-jumped to Theology, it spread to Greece, we had good relations, but I was Hindu, he switched and within five turns declared war. My main border with him is well fortified; however, he snuck in a bunch of guys in a back-attack on the holy city, defended by 1 Warrior :(

Right now he has 3 units 2 squares away. At the time I discovered Bronze Working, I didn't switch because I didn't want the turn of anarchy. Well, now my only hope is to switch and rush an Axeman. That extra turn would have been very helpful.

Building Stonehenge in well-meant attempt to achieve good start on first attempt at cultural victory, while completely forgetting military and being squashed by Alexander:cry:

I learnt a LOT that game:mischief:

Adressing to...

c) Well, I got a DELL Inspiron 510m with an Intel GMA 852 Chipset and an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 - and post-patch the game runs even on a standard map quite fine...

d) I use this often when I need something from my desktop - it's not a bug, it's a feature :D .

I have a tale of my latest idiot mistakes to tell:

I was playing as Hatty on a Warlord Game with a Standard Continental Map. I had previously wiped Caesar from the map and was now turning my greedy eyes towards Pete's realm. Okay, admittely Marines vs. Riflemen is not fair, but that's not the point. The point is: I had captured two of his cities already when the message came "Enemy spotted near Rostov" with a Galleon sign. I just thought "Ah, Pete is coming to try some marauding" and paid no further heed to it. Two turns later I see a Cossack near Rostov - that would have been the marauder in my thought. You should have seen my face when I finally realised that it was not one Cossack but 3 Cossacks, 3 Grenadiers, 1 Knight and 2 Catapults. Ouch ! Though I had two Infantrys defending Rostov there was no chance, Pete recaptured Rostov. What a move, Pete lost two cities, but sneaked behind my front line and "stole" one city back. It didn't help him much though, 'cause my sturdy Marines recaptured the city 6 turns later.

I've learned something. Definitely. Thanks Pete :king: :goodjob: !

Regards,

Lord Timon

Laghing at all you guys, only to make the EXACT SAME mistakes in my own games

Changing to Pacifism when you had no state religion. :/

One time I had briefly converted to a religion that only existed in two of my cities for the sole purpose of appeasing a neighbor.

He ended up going to war with me anyway, and it took me quite awhile to remember to convert back to Judaism (present in all of my cities). So much for that extra 20 gold per turn I could have been getting, after all, I did have the Spiral Minaret built...

Learn never that would take the fun out of this thread waiting for the next post of a mistake

Leaving my workers asleep for X turns after getting to railroads.

That's me, right there. (I've started using the "build trade network" as the way to sleep workers after the pre-rail development is done. The workers go nap in a city until there's roading or railroading to do, then they jump by themselves to build railroad or repair pillaged roads. So then, of course, on an archipelago map, I forget that all my workers are asleep on islands. Hey, I've rail and coal and iron for years, why no railroad around the capitol?)

Paying attention, that's the ticket.

I always forget to undo most of "just for the moment" changes, leaving cities in "emphasize production" for 1000 years after the rush to finish a courthouse, and then wondering why the dang city is so small.

Upgrading all units with "25+ vs. Melee" thinking Mali Skirmishers were unique spearmen. :crazyeye: :wallbash:

really? with civil service the farms have to stay connected to fresh water? So what happens if they're cut off, are they all destroyed?
They do not get destroyed, they just don't work. I had my irrigated farm plains tiles reduced to 1/1 and my extra food from having farmed bonus resources reduced by 1. It's as if the farms were not there. Of course all one has to do is replace the missing link (after dispatching the offending invaders).

Waking a fortified unit does not remove the fortification bonus, moving it does (as does upgrading). You can re-fortify and not lose the bonus.

trading marble for whatever and then asking myself "why dont i have a double production bonus on the Parthenon?i have marble!".

On a similar token, I recently ran my Skirmishers away from a bunch of enemy Axeman because I figured they'd get destroyed...
