I can make a nuclear reactor release its energy pretty darn fast...but it won't remain a reactor for very long.

And, it's already been considered as a space propulsion source via that exact mechanism.

Well, almost. It's much more efficient, in terms of weight, to blow up a series of nuclear bombs than a series of nuclear reactors.

I like the concept...but of course I've always leaned towards ideas that involve blowing things up.
