You are forgetting the 2 or 3 people on each episode who do the stunts, eat the balls, and lose the final stunt, therefore earning nothing. That is why I would not go on Fear Factor; too high of a probablility of eating disgusting objects and earning nothing in return.

The final stunt is usually a physical activity, requring skill instead of insects. There are 3 stunts, the first and the last requiring skill and physical competence, the second always requiring something regarded as disgusting. My point is, though, how much money they pay you is not relavant if you do not win, as you have to compete with 5 others for the money. Therefore, you only have a 16.67% chance of earning the cash prize.
