If You Have a Moment

However this is a matter of world importance! :D

The case for Italy and Canada versus Israel is essentially the size of their economies and through the various organizations they belong to (eg. EU, NATO, G8 etc) they do have an influence, albeit limited, on world events.

I concede there are very different angles to approach this from.

And now goodnight.

How exactly did you come to that conclusion? China's economy is growing at a huge rate, around 7%, and it has made great progress in the last few decades. It could even overtake France in the not too distant future.

Also, trying to claim that Canada is more powerful internationally than Russia and China is a bit, ermmmmm, silly.

And there is NO EU!!! It is merely a name right now, and cannot possibly work anyway.

Actually there is.

And you can't deny it based on your baised feelings.
And the EU can and is working.

Isolationists are so funny.

UK on 3rd is a little surprising.

I don't think so; Britain still "punches above its weight" (forgive the cliche) for a bunch of reasons, including educational links, the rising ratings of the BBC over CNN, the vast levels of investment abroad, great actors, sex kittens like Kate Beckinsale and Kate Winslet...

Truthfully, I think this list reflects not just theoretical power (e.g. nukes) but power actually used and applied, whether financial, military or just plain influential:

1. The United States of America
2. China
3. Germany (european economy gets a chill when they sneeze)
4. Russia (which depends an awful lot on german sneezes)
5. Japan
6. The UK
7. India
8. Sa'udi Arabia
9. France
10. Los Estados Unidos de Mexico (diplomatically and economically more relevant than Brazil)

Can I put the world bank in at #7.5?

Canadians (of which I am one) may be deluded into thinking our economy makes us powerful - since it's not like anything else does - but our economy is (happily) almost totally dependent on direct trade with the US, so we probably punch below our economic weight in the rest of the world as a result.

Where else would I want to live? These days, with Canada as turgid as it is, the list of good alternatives is long. But my top 3 are:

#1 - The UK, since I'm first gen from there
#2 - The US - provided it was Oregon, Washington, California, Chicago, New York, Washington DC or New England. Rural america scares the crap out of my mildly libertarian British Columbian self unless it's a nice, well-treed Pacific Northwest rural

And, ringing in at #3, but a close third indeed, is...

The British Virgin Islands!

Mexico diplomatically and economically more relevant than Brazil?

Brazil has 167 Million people-Mexico 96 Million

Brazil has GDP of 730 Billion $-Mexico 428 Billion $

Brazil has GDP per Capita 4350$-Mexico 4440$

Brazil has Growth of GDP p.a. 2.9%-Mexico 2.7%

Brazil has 287.600 Soldiers- Mexico has 192.770 Soldiers

Mexico has better relations to the US than Brazil, alright.
But Brazil is building their own SSNs and most Latin American countries send e.G. their ships to Brazil for refitting. It is the only L.American nation owning an Aircraft Carrier.Mexico probably dominates dwarfs like Belize or San Salvador, but Brazil has to compete with countries like Argentina and Venezuela and wins.

When the FTAA is there Mexico loses his most important advantage versus Brazil.
If I had to choose between Mexico and Brazil to be my friend I´d choose Brazil.

I would like to say a big Thanks to all who posted a reply, it was very interesting.
