With all this global warming ****. It looks like the end is within my lifetime. It seems like every friggen week a new report is issued saying global warming is seriously going to **** us up. Also Bush is a friggen moron for not acting and being a global warming denialist. It is going to happen and if a neo conserve wins again the world will probaly end.

Summary: TEH WORLDZ GOING TO END!! :hide:

I think our race in general, and Western civilization in particular is in for a bumpy ride in the next couple of centuries. But I doubt that we'll go extinct or the world will end, or anything.

Well humans will inevitibly go extinct someday. Unless we can creat an artificial star. Assuming stars are also going extinct.

Cubsfan, eh? Well, I'd start worrying when your team wins a World Series... a sure sign of End Times, that would be.

(No, I'm not Cubs bashing... Red Sox fan here, I feel your pain...)

Every generation longs to see the end of the world. The methodology and reasoning change, but the desire to be present at the final curtain call is nigh universal. Humanity is an arrogant lot, and no mistake.

But so far, every generation has been disappointed. I don’t see us breaking the trend.

NO other generation has only had religous backing. We have scientific backing unless we act the world will end.

What consitutes the end of the world?

I think it's George Carlin that said it... "The planet is fine. The people are plucked."

If you're worried about Bush, let me allay your fears; if GW (global warming, not George W.) is real, well then he's said something about fighting it. If it's not real, you have nothing to worry about.

If it is real and Bush does nothing, well, he only has about 2 years left in office. I doubt much can happen then. Then you'll probably have some liberal president (Republican or Democrat, the way things are looking right now...) and you can complain to them.

Would it really be that bad if the world did end?

*sigh* No, we don't.

Humanity cannot destroy the world. We just don't have that much power, at least not yet. Earth (and the life upon it) has dealt with all kinds of catastrophes that make the cruelest blows of man seem like mere pinpricks. At worst, we will simply make life more interesting for some of the current dominant species. (including us)

Even the in the very worst of the realistic global-warming scenarios, we're only talking about a few billion deaths and a re-shuffling of the deck. Is that bad? Hell yes! Which is why lots of people are rethinking how we approach life on our planet. But it's a far cry from the end of civilization, much less the end of mankind or the world.

We're approaching a bottleneck. We'll either think of some clever solutions to get through it with our current bulk, or we'll start (very) rapidly slimming down. Either way, though, we'll get through.

You know, I'd worry more about Yellowstone erupting in the near future than the nebulous threat of global warming. Sure, sea levels rising and desertification aren't my idea of a nice vacation, but it still beats getting buried in ash followed by a worldwide famine.

Archaeological evidence indicates that the last time a so-called "super-volcano" erupted, the worldwide human population was reduced to as few as 10,000, creating a genetic bottleneck that can still be traced through our own mitochondrial DNA.

Build your bomb shelters and stockpile the freeze-dried Spam n' ammo!

The only way we might be able to destroy the world in our lifetimes is by a massive nuclear war. And that's not probable at this juncture, but I think nuclear weapons are far more dangerous than GW will ever be. Even then, there's still some possibility that a fragment of humanity would survive.

Meh...I suppose it's possible you'll live to see it, but I guarentee it won't be quite what most imagine it to be.

Yes the osuthern hemispher will survive the northern hemispher is anihilated though.

Everyone forgets the 5th horseman..

I would argue that it's virtually inevitable that significant numbers of humans would survive, though in relatively isolated parts of the world. But I admit I'm in no hurry to test that hypothesis. ;)
