I dropped out of following Civ V stuff for a week, and now I'm overwhelmed and confused. Help me out.

I see we got a new patch that does some things... but more amazingly, we have this Steam Workshop thingy...

Here is my confusion. I'm seeing items in the workshop about religions and spying, but, unless I've missed something really huge, Gods and Kings hasn't been released yet... so how are people writing mods for something that isn't there? Or do these mods add spying and religions?

I'm so completely confused.

It's like Skyrim... I kind of stopped playing once the Workshop opened and I got overwhelmed.

anyway... help? Slow and careful. I'm an old man.

Beta testers ;).

This, also people have made mods for religion since the first couple months of release.

You have to be careful with mods. They're fun and add flavor but many just crash the game, especially after patches.

Dear Confused of Nebraska,
Do not worry about the Steam Workshop thingy... it's more for beta testers, modders and the like, not for us mere mortals! Just ignore it :crazyeye:

I disagree! The steam workshop lets you Mod your game in numerous ways.

CivNIGHTS
Faerun Scenario

are 2 of the "Total Conversion" mods that change many elements of the game, it is a whole new Civ5. Note many of these were in the mod browser and are on civfanatics.

"Lesser" or "Modular" mods as i call them, can be combined with each other, and in some cases with total conversion mods.

For example, Tree Growth causes occasional forests to grow.

Some mods fall somewhere in between - Echoes of Ages adds is a "workover" of many elements. It is compatible with some total conversion mods and MOST smaller mods.

So, what mod is right for you? Start by thinking about what bothers you in the basic game, and ask how you would improve it - there is a chance somebody has made something along those lines. Do you want a unit that can pick up your enemies horses and drop them off in your own territory? Herdsman mod is for you.

Some mods are only for Gods+Kings, while some are for vanilla. This will work itself out over the next few months as modders make updates.

Personally, i use about 6-10 mods when im playing a total conversion mod - I might use 20-40 mods otherwise. Note that Echoes of Ages works with many many mods out there.

If you have specific questions about the workshop, or using mods feel free to ask!
