I'm sick and tired of the glorification of homosexuality

I've noticed this phenomenon as well (I guess it's hard not to if you watch tv). It does seem like there are way more gay people on tv sitcoms now (as a percentage of population) then there are in the general public, but I think the idea is to build understanding & acceptance of a group that is still missunderstood & persecuted by a large number of people. Seems like a reasonable effort to me. Building understanding is generally a good thing.
I just wonder why tv has picked up on this group to champion in particular. For example I bet that in real life there is at least one interracial couple for every gay couple, yet on tv you see gay people all the time now, but I can't even think of a single interracial couple on tv (although I'm sure there are some here or there) and in real life they still catch their share of persecution in some places.

It's funny how the word "lesbian", which really means "gay (woman)" is associated with hot sexual action by many men. WHile on the other hand the word "gay" is associated with gay men, and thus is a turnoff for most men. This is a doubble standard, because it says that lesbians are fine, even hot, while gay men are not.

Well I think neither of them are hot, because I'm straight. I find it weird that so many men buy into this masturbation-trend of pornographic lesbianism, while failing to realize that real lesbians are NOTHING like that.

What did I tell you about the painting of a false, pornographic image of lesbianism?

It is in no way representative for 'real' homosexuals. It's speculative and should be taken off mainstream, simply because I believe that the majority is, or will become fed up and tired of it.

very interesting note DamnCommie, I certainly agree that if homosexuality in the media would make it more agreeable for society (which I personally don't agree with, but oh well) then surely interracial couples shoul recieve representation in the media as well.

I find that this is a typical argument I hear all the time. You claim not to be prejudice and then make a rant about what sux about homosexuality. Hmm let me give you an idea of what your doing.

Don't get me wrong I don't have anything against blacks but.....why are they always stealing peoples things? I mean I know there too dumb for college but still. Why is it so cool to be black now a days. What happened to good ole white America?

And I am sorry but it is far from "cool" to have gays in shows and movies. It is controversial because a large chunk of America still thinks that we are pervs that should be "cured" It is great that gays have gotten more tv coverage because it refuses to hide the fact the we are there. It forces middle America to realise that we are there we are not some far away pervert that only exists in alleyways.

For too long gays have been hidden and the few times they recieved any notice it was in refrence to abomination or pervert. Yes the issue of homoseuality comes up alot. Why? because a resolution has not been reached. We are still fighting for equal rights.

I know how hard it is to counter a fad like this, but moderating that kind of content would be highly desirable. Or perhaps alotting the content to more specialized channels, you know what I mean.

Why does it have to be shown on regular channels? I'm not saying that it should be outlawed, perhaps I just miss that they'd stress the necessity to emphasize that this is NOT normal and that those people belong to a minority.

But after we stop the glorification of gayness, let's stop the bashing of fathers on TV. I'm one, and I'm sick of being portrayed as a bumbling incompetent.

Hang in there, Mr. Republican. Too many of our fellow posters are violently opposed to anything that even slightly disagrees with their cherished beliefs.

Personally, I don't mind seeing homosexuals portrayed on TV or in movies, as long as they do it in a realistic manner. Most gay people I know are rather ordinary folks, whose only real divergence from the "straight" world is their choice of bed partners. There just aren't that many flaming homos who are so arty. They're truck drivers, pressmen, infantrymen, etc. Regular joes, one and all for the most part.

But I also agree with Mojo. Let's leave the random lesbian kisses -- Jennifer Aniston and Winona Ryder .... hmmm, lesbian kisses.

Wrong. That's not what I'm doing. I have all the time specifically said I do not say ANYTHING about gay people as a group. It is completely clear from my posts that I speak of a fad, and nothing else.

Gays as a MINORITY group (2%) gets WAY TOO MUCH attention. It's a fad, and many people don't like it. It's a good observation by DamnCommie, when he says it's partly because we want to create acceptance. That's one of the reasons, but if this continues it's going to backfire. Being gay is nothing more than being gay. It's not particularly cool or hip. It's made to look cool or hip by the fad created by people who try to earn money by mediocrity in television.

The fact that so many people, especially men, buy into this false, pornographic depiction of lesbians is surprising and sad, and hopefully about to come to an end as this fad gets played out.

You're very much right about the portrayal of husbands on television today.

They're being portrayed as simple-minded-golf-playing-horny dorks who only think about football, porno and their average house and their hardwood floor.

While the women are portrayed as intelligent, mature, senistive, emotionally evolved beings who just needs to lift their skirt to make their husbands go nuts and become all submissive toward their commands.

This is indeed part of the problem, but it's not impossible to change this.

Anything controversial makes ratings, gays are controversial right now so there you go. Also it sounds as if you'd just like to not see gays on TV. I hope that's not so. Also I've heard that it's anywhere from 2-10%

That's what I'm trying to avoid. I'm trying to specifically to keep the original subject and not let the thread slide off subject to where moderating is needed.

I have no problem with gay people, and I have no problem with them appearing on television as long as it's within reason, meaning somewhat in line with the size of the group and what the group really is. They're presenting a false and pornographic image of what homosexuality is. It's gay people, no more, no less. They're not particularly hot (for straight people) and neither are they super beings in touch with their emotions on a higher level than straight people.

New research reveals that gay organizations (which are the most eager sources in terms of giving out information on percentages of homosexueality) have been dealing with wrong numbers. This combined with the fad has mislead people to believe many weird things about it that's not true. It's actually no more than 2-3%.

I have answered this question many times in thread already, but I can repeat myself. Because it's on mainstream television, turn the TV on and you're guaranteed to see it. Because it's being blown out of proportion and thrown at us through mainstream television. It has an underserved amount of air-time making it hard to "not watch it".

It's everywhere, and I'm (and many others) are tired of it.
