I've noticed this phenomenon as well (I guess it's hard not to if you watch tv). It does seem like there are way more gay people on tv sitcoms now (as a percentage of population) then there are in the general public, but I think the idea is to build understanding & acceptance of a group that is still missunderstood & persecuted by a large number of people. Seems like a reasonable effort to me. Building understanding is generally a good thing.
I just wonder why tv has picked up on this group to champion in particular. For example I bet that in real life there is at least one interracial couple for every gay couple, yet on tv you see gay people all the time now, but I can't even think of a single interracial couple on tv (although I'm sure there are some here or there) and in real life they still catch their share of persecution in some places.
