I'm playing vanilla civ4.

I'm at a late game stage in my Immortal game, standard game speed/standard size pangea map. I have about 57% of the landmass and near a domination victory. I have my research on 100% since I have captured all the holy cities and spread the religions yet the AI is STILL outteching me by about 10 techs (still not enough for spaceship though)!

What's worst is that the AI who was friendly towards me decides to declare war on me. She is coming in with tanks vs. my infantry. What happened to diplomacy??? Bringing in other war ally is not an option because well, I eliminated them all.

I thought allying urself (in terms of religion) with the strongest civ throughout the game is a good strategy to use, but this actually is not so good in Immortal because u won't be able to disturbed their expansion. Maybe allying urself with weaker civs is better.

Furthermore, I found that the AI in immortal will not trade techs for alphabet anymore unless u package it with another tech.

BTW: I play with chinese Qin Shi Huang

It was Cathy, right? What a nice lady! :) I think she is the only one who will attack even when friendly.

I think that in a case like that all you can do is build huge amount of units. Most of them should be siege units with barrage promotions, even a big stack of modern units is a easy pick for obsolete units after five barrage III suicide cannons. And ambush infantry can actually easily beat tanks without combat promotions, when facing those you have to be prepared to lose some troops. Luckily AI can't upgrade anything to tanks, so they usually don't have more than one, sometimes two promotions.

You may not have enough units, but you can still win. Trust me! :) You probably lose some cities, maybe 1-3, but rest you should be able to protect. Make peace as soon as you can while building only units. Later you need a big SoD, which will slowly capture enemy cities. It have to be big, AI will throw lots of units against it if odds are good (and they are since you are loosing techrace). You need other smaller stacks to take care any pillagers or attackers. If you focus only on building units, you should be fine. Switch to police state, vassallage and theocracy to speed things up and to get more promotions. Then just go and kill that b**ch! ;)

And you are right, you should never ally with the strongest civ if you can't get yourself over domination limit. :)

The best way from my experience to have an AI declare on you is to have a decent sized power graph. But there are also some AIs who are not trustworthy to have as allies like alex, monty, cathy, etc.

You're right. The AI I'm talking about is Cathy.
