[BTS] Immortal Isolation Desperation

To 840 AD with lots of screenshots ;). Important question: Does it ever make sense to liberate a colony so you don't have to pay maintenance? Deity AI as Vassal might help me out with decent teching? Never seen anyone recommending this though. But check screenies+save for more info ;).

Spoiler :

Techpath: AH -> Mining -> BW -> Masonry. Going for Pyramids. Lots of food and no good rivers.

Some fogbusting with this map shape is not too hard, but without Copper in BFC I might have been toast. Put some hammers into Great Wall for Failgold. Writing after Masonry.

Success

After that expansion and run scientists everywhere basically. Tech after Writing: Pottery for cheap Granaries -> Fishing -> Math -> Currency -> CoL for Caste. First GP was an Engineer, I started a GA with him. Starved out a GS, bulbed Philo 225 BC, founded Taoism and switched to Paci immediately. Then researched pre-reqs for Astro bulb and collected GS.

Finally settling the Island in the south for trade routes. Will put 2 cities there.

In the end I bulbed Optics and Astro (2x) with 3 GS. This is a case where I don't see the point in sitting back and teching. I have two cottages and Education won't help me. Astro-Traderoutes asap and take someone out with Steel I'd say.

So I played on until 840 AD. My plan stands. Collecting GS for Chemistry bulb, avoiding Paper and Education. Civil Service won't do me much good either. Trade for what I can and research Gunpowder, bulb Chemistry and (this might ruin the plan): self-tech Steel, uuh... so we are looking at 1300 AD or something Jannissaries+Cannons. Any hope of that working?

Tech:

Diplo sucks, have to switch out of my religion after 2 GS. Again I got an Engineer. What do I do with him? Napoleon demanded 200 Gold on the turn I met him. I gave it to him -> meet Saladin, traded with worst enemies, -4 Diplo. Sigh.

Shaka and Sitting Bull in war. That continent (Alex there too) seems like it might be backwards. But no really soft target. Doesn't look too good. This is Deity remember.

Got Sala's religion in one of my cities through auto-spread though. Will switch into that maybe.

Will switch to Caste System next turn I think, had to whip some stuff (Galleons for circumnavigation for example, some infra)

Empire:

Does it ever make sense to liberate a colony? Seems I have more land to settle, but I actually make a net-loss from this city. And I don't really have time to set all this up if I want to attack before 1500 AD :D.

But I've never seen someone actually recommend this. But surely a Deity AI colony with 5-6 cities could do a decent job teching and help me out? And if I don't settle this now someone else will get it.

This is why I stopped playing for now.

Yeah, I went for Pyramids in this latest one. Lots of food and I didn't see any island cities. Also no sea food in the start so going for Fishing-Sailing would have been a distraction. I played to 1020 AD (more detailed infos in my last post) and I am pretty sure I have a winning position one way or another. Hell, I am on score parity with most of the AI, that never happens on Deity this early (unless you rush someone). I'm afraid to botch it though :D ... would be my first Deity Isolation win. With a strange tech path.

I buckled down and took care of my city micro. In my last save I had things like running a Spy for no reason or not working Gem mine... because in my mind: Deity Isolation = lose anyway. So I played sloppily.

Any thoughts on this one? ;) Here is latest save. I fixed the Diplo problems and as far as I'm concerned, everyone except Saladin are sitting ducks.

Don't want to blow this game and ruin my mood :D. Decided against liberating islands. Knowing my luck, I would pop Asoka as vassal and everyone would hate him and thus, me aswell.

Biggest impact on my play so far is that I changed my view on mines vs. windmills, so thanks for that ;). I valued mines too high for no reason.

Maybe I should make a new thread with this game, but I don't want to start too many new threads in short order... especially having started my Deity series just two days ago.

Tech situation *puts bait for someone to check this more thorough :D*
