Greetings, Immortals and would-be Immortals (and indeed any other players of any level), and welcome to the Immortal University.

Here is our Leader:

Here's the opening scene:

The following settings were used to create this map

And the Demographics for people to spot any info they can

Before we start, here's the copy & paste bit where I get to pretend that I'm TMIT:

To play, just extract the WB save file into your worldbuilder saves directory, then play it. Use custom scenario if you want some extra settings to tickle your fancy. This series was designed for people learning immortal, so most people here will be at that level or trying to attain it, although deity players are welcome also. Hell, if you want to play this on NOBLE. The intention of this and any other game thread I post is to get better. Play whatever level you need in order to improve.

If you are aspiring IMM+, try to remember to add archery back to the barbs in WB. Every time you don't, a deity AI will kill a kitten, although there are a lot of kittens so it's not the end of the world if you prefer easymode barbs .

I do request people to list their difficulty and speed. In terms of updates, well nobody follows that anyway. Post in the manner you feel comfortable. Typical comparison dates are 1 AD, liberalism, and victory/defeat, as well as any major events. If in doubt, go with that.

We also have an initial Immortal/Normal autosave which is much more convenient since you can avoid all the worldbuilder shenanigans. It comes with my personal seal of approval (not least as my worldbuilder edits may contain hideous game-destroying errors that could cause your computer to explode ).

WB saves tonight, or more probably when i get chance tomorrow :)

Have fun

My oh my! Just as I was starting to get bored at practicing HA rushes in IU63-Victoria and venture to the forums to see if there are any other old games to pick up, I find this gem!

You are my hero Habitus! :)

Ah Brennus, one of those leaders I still have a tough time with. Does anyone have good advice about suing Brennus effectively?

I would probably move the scout to the NW plains hill to see what is over there, then either settle that hill or 1S for fresh water.

Main problem with Celts are the starting techs. Spiritual is a great trait if used wisely. It allows temporary use of Caste to pump out Great People to boost techs or helps with diplo and war.

My first instinct with the Celts is war. Both leaders have good war traits (on paper). Charismatic is certainly always good. The real kicker though is the extremely underrated UU. The Gallic Warrior is actually pretty darn powerful if you make use of that Guerrilla promo line ( a line not available to melee units otherwise). Charismatic makes it better as you will get to GIII fast. Use it. Beeline IW and go stomp.

Here I might go AH>IW. Commerce can be an issue though.

1st try was over quick.
Just love it when the rng mess you over.
1st 2 fights in the game:
Barb attacks at 25% odds. I loose.
I attack at 90% odds. loose again. Game over.

I'd move to the NE hill to see what you lose from moving, and lake gives fresh water to sip and hill, 1S gets you the river for possible trade route if 2nd city is close and on same river :) I probably wouldn't give up the 5 yield deer (6 with lucky early forest growth) so sip likely for me

gah, I wish the map generator would just extend the river instead of dumping a junk lake tile in the BFC

Haven't played Brennus for a long time so kicking off now. Hunting is a good starting tech with these BFC quadrupeds, and I'm a big fan of getting an initial scout. No gallic warrior love here though, seems like you have to war early more than I normally like to leverage them. Inland Sea typically has a lot of free land too, not sure if there is good synergy.

Scout move 2NW seemed to offer most pre-settle information. :undecide:

Scout move and evaluation:
Spoiler :

Seeing that the edge of the map is up there, I moved the scout 1SW, which revealed a rice, that I then moved the scout 1SE, and got no new information.
I think that it's worth it to spend one turn to move the settler 3south, alot of flood-plains and two food resources is awesome.
The hills are lacking though, but as a worker/settler pump, and with use of whipping and overflow it is probably good enough.

Since i' ve been having a somewhat easy time on emperor, ive decided to sign up for this....as my first immortal game.

First attempt:
Spoiler :
had me trying to spawnbust with only warriors, delaying the wheel and agri in favour of writing to race to IW, whilst settling towards Babylon. Its 875BC, i got 3 cities, 3 libraries, barracks all set up, a ton of workers, and Iron is ONE TILE outside of my borders..., i'll need to chop a settler with the quickness. Probably will miss my window of opportunity.

Now that I've seen the map it seems wiser approach to just settle more cities and take it slower, then try for cataphant attack.
I'm sure one of the better players will somehow pull off a rush, but i dont see it

Any ideas ? too late for trying to overwhelm Hammy? Also I have to get my hands on Alpha somehow getting a feeling if i war any time soon I'll have to build research to recover and limp to an eco tech....

EDIT: tried a second time to compare:
Spoiler :
going just early writing then Wheel/BW to get some horse and some chops in, and got a much better situation at the same date: 4 cities, a GS (didnt use him yet) and Aesthetics done, planning on trading for everything im missing, and now of course NOONE has Alpha even after I tech maths !

What`s better ? A cataphant rush or an elepult rush ? :)

Anyway, i have some spare time this weekend and i think i`ll jump into it as well.

2nd try until 100 AD give up

Spoiler :

Ugh, Brennus with no starting techs :)
Well, I did not SIP. Instead I moved settler down to the corn and got corn, pigs, gold and fps. But man the game was slow. I went ag/mine/pott/bw then oracle techs.
Took the scout and managed to met most of the civs. I knew just is often trouble and I was right again. He rexed like crazy in the early going. Me?
Was sitting at 1 city when he had 4. I needed to build warriors and I wanted to get city up to 5-6 so I could work most of the tiles. Barb archer detroyed my corns and won over my warrior at 11% odds, other than that no trolling.
Inca took SH early so very little fail god there. Took MC with Oracle and went for alpha. Rexed to 3 cites and Babylon was expanding fast north. Shaka to my east is just a disaster. He is backwards but has a huge army. Went for currency and trying to get music 1st which will be close. Barb cities poped up to the easy and southeast blocking my way there. Took the city to the southeast but Shaka made it to the one east before me. Rexed 2 more cities, south to stop Babylons expansion(11 cities 1 AD!) Just had also 11 :(
Now I have 6 cities which is the fewest, my tech is good compared to the other AIs. Got a great Engineer and wonder if I am going to get the great library out of him. Any suggestions?
Only Shaka has worse pts than me and he is in weoorn mode :(
If he attacks me now I am in deep ****.
I still haven't hooked up my iron so I only have archers and chariots which is poor esp vs Shaka.
Hard map when the Ais are allowed to become big.
Shaka is without question the worst neighbour you can have. With Monty you can always troll religion but Shaka doesn't care much for that and he will almost always attack someone.
Is hard to get to pleased and that is no guarantee anyway. Of course he is alone in conf too so if I join that religion the whole world will hate me.
ragnar comes a close 2nd as worst neighbour.
And 5 turns later he declares :(
I loose the eastern city and the war is just killing me. Not losing cites, but Shaka is just pumping out armies and the other Ais are having a field day :(
Will try again me thinks...

Played for a bit till around 300 AD. I've got 7 total cities and just starting to whip Trebs/Mace. I'll throw in some screenies/a save/and comments in a spoil a bit later.

For those worried about getting declared on...... a non spoiler tip, especially with the Celts is to throw down 1-2 Forts in the direction you think you're going to be attacked from and be sure to build an early DUN (+50Defense) in your main unit pump. If nothing else, have a few workers ready to quickly build some forts. Makes defending from any early war very easy.

Re. DOW risk:
Spoiler :

One good thing about being right up in the corner is we don't share borders with people for quite a long time. In my game Shaka DOWed in the other direction very early on - even asked me to help first :D

Makes him a useful barrier against HC for now and as Hammi is pleased the other side I'll just sit tight with a few HR warriors and tech to cuirs. On the downside Toku is grabbing all the stone wonders

Spoiler :
It's all nice and well if Shaka decides to go that way but if not you are in deep ****

I tried to go for the machinery+engineering bulb.
However, since I got a very nice capital I decided to build a academy with the first GScientist.
After that, I did not get engineering at the desired date... :(

Perhaps one could set up 3 libraries or something like that.

Okay, played till 500 AD
Spoiler :
Obviously did not settle in place. I decided to settle along the river so I could get immediate trade routes to virtually every city. Vienna founded 2160BC and Tolosa founded 1760 BC, towards Shaka to box/save land for later. 1080BC Georg founded and 950BC Camu. Vermamilion and Durnov both founded right around 400BC bringing me to 7 total. Seeing how I settled pretty close to both Shaka and Babylon the barbarians weren't much of a problem. I just fog busted early with 6 warriors and sent out a few chariots when I hooked up horse from border pop.

Tech path went Agr>Ah>Min>TW>Bw>Pot>Wrt>Alpha(670BC)Currency>CoL>Math>Aesth>Lit>Music>Mc>Cs>Sailing>Paper.

1st GS for Academy and after CoL ran caste for several turns to time 2nd GS and the 3rd GS would come during GA from music. Bulbed Mach/Eng and traded for all filler techs, to include Calendar. Worked out the math and timed it so that as soon as my 3rd GS (Eng) was finished CS would be finished next turn.

From there ran Burea/Slavery/OR and began whipping/building infra/units. Shaka declared on me in 200AD but seeing how I adopted Judaism earlier I had around 15 Dun Archers/forts ready. Didn't even need the forts....

I'm going to take 3 of Shaka's cities so I'm guessing around 800 AD I'll have 10 cities, and then I'll plan on attacking Babylon down south around 1000ADish and should be able to control 5 of his cities for a grand total of 15 by by around 1500AD. That's the plan anyways.

I'm going to get a University up in my Capital Asap, and matter of fact, I have only been focusing on wealth/market there. Tech path is going towards PP, then down the bottom half towards Chemistry>Steel>Communism FTW. I haven't decided what I want to bulb with Liberalism yet.

My economy has been a Bureau Capital with other cities going hybrids with farms/cottage/mine. So basically the cottages I have right now will stay but everything else, including new cities will be farms/ws while running caste. I figured early it was better to use cottages to help tech quicker....and there was enough food so I could whip/grow + work cottages. Just lots of micromanaging every turn in every city to maximize growth/commerce/production/ and whip timing every 2 turns.
