Immortal University 97 - Suleiman

To 150 BC and an interesting juncture. Would appreciate some input on a point from a guru. :)

Spoiler :
Went SIP and AH > mining > pottery. Settled city #2 to the SE for the FPs and some cottages – and then teched mysticism and fishing to bring it online. This is a very interesting map IMHO – with a number of ways to play. Eventually decided to target BW and IW to nab the gems and help support a REx (and leverage IMP). Will be interesting to see if others decide to (i) go early alpha in the hope that an AI will trade IW (without any guarantee) or (ii) shun the jungle, build TGLH and then REx. With IW in, tech went sailing (for trade routes to help the economy) > maths (to unlock the UB and open up calendar) > currency (to help recover the economy).

With currency in, I now have the chance to backfill – will take a look at the AI behaviour guide to refresh my memory re: AI tendencies to trade before trading. Next choice on the tech front meanwhile is either calendar (for resources) or CoL for courthouses. Although courthouses will be handy with 10 cities in the empire (and another 2 to be settled very shortly), I'm inclined to go calendar for the happy cap boost and commerce from resources.

The big choice I have though is whether to use a lone chariot to DoW Nappy's unaccompanied settler, which is about to settle just south of the barb city. The city site (assuming that's where he settles) isn't a great loss at all – but it is a chance at a free worker. The problem I have however, is the complete absence of any military in my cities closest to Nappy – although iron will be online shortly. As tempting as a free worker is, I confess that my lack of military makes me inclined to pass up the DoW amd make myself vulnerable to an immortal AI counter. But I wonder if any gurus on here would take the risk?

1802 Domination

Spoiler :
58 cities and 5 vassals with another 23 cities. This game was like a realllllly long roflstomp.

I accidentally accepted Corporation when Sury capitulated near the end of the game and obsoleted my GLH... oops! Good thing it didn't matter at that point. I just automated and hit next turn for awhile until enough of the captured cities came online.

After seeing the size of this game and the time I played on emp.

conquest 1725 AD

Spoiler :

Which allowed me to not settle a gazillion cities. I had lots more room but 15 cities was enough for me. Then I did the overkill with to many cavs and just crushed everyone as noone had rifling. Was tediuos enough going to all the island with galleons.
On Imm you need to settle the whole island and I wasn't in the mood to micro 30 cities.

Since I requested the map type, I better get playing this one. :p Had computer issues cutting into my Civ time. :(

Though, reading the comments so far, I am wondering if I should just try this one at either Monarch to get it out of the way in a curb-stomp or crank it up to Deity to punish my rusty ass for my hubris. :hmm:

My first win on Emperor, Normal speed 1715 Conquest.

Spoiler :
Funny to see Ghandi with 17 cities, I actually had to capture more than one of his cities for him to give up.

Took Napoleon out with cuirs pretty early but then had a lot of logistics problems getting my army to all the other continents. Probably should have planned better to get some galleys to upgrade ahead of time?

Spoiler :

Lol it's a "garbage & small" map, GLH is always a good option . I call it that, but it IS true that the wonder is consistently strong on both &small

I seriously hate these scripts, so I read spoilers without playing it. They give enormous imbalances in land distribution (this time it favors the human), have obnoxious micro to deal with the islands, and further overpower already strong things like GLH and Sid's Sushi, CONSISTENTLY.

I guess they can be fun, but the lack of balance just isn't for me at least.

Yeah, I was trying to find the best map type for fun and fair games. I played many games with big and small but it was just too random. I'd get isolated starts all the time, and I'd be stuck in some pathetic island chain. Or, even if I didn't, someone would, and they would be knocked out of the game.

Phil what maps do you play on? I don't like pangea because it ends up being a game of risk - it ends in the napoleonic era all the time. I would never play archipelago. Terra is cool in theory but ends up just being a crowded pangea, unless you sandbox and grab the new world for the hell of it. Right now I'm playing hemispheres. I didn't play continents for a long time so I'm getting used to that again.

I think my ideal map would be something like a cross between terra and continents. So there would be 3 continents but 1 of them would be uninhabited. That would be cool, but I've never seen a script like that unfortunately.
