I find it wierd that the Persian Immortals which were clearly a heavy infantry unit in Civ4 is a pathetic chariot when in civ3 even it was a infantry.

I woulda thought that maybe the immortals would have a attack rating of 6 like normal swordsman but start with a medic promotion.

Either way the persians for jibbed in terms of their special unit!

The Immortals during the Persian empire time were melee units, but in the Sassandid period they were cavalry, so this is not so far fetched as it looks ( too much "300", maybe? )

And a swordmen with medic promo out of bat would be very close of the OP line .....

LOL! Are you being serious? This post has a "but Praetorians are so underpowered" smell to it. ;)

If you want real-world accurate, then Civ4 has a lot bigger problems than the representations of unique units. This is a game and you can't take it too seriously or it loses all fun.

ahahaha

nah i love CIV4, i've played civ1, 2, 3 and now 4.

And no i did get it from 300 (worst movie).

The immortals were famouse because the King of persia would fund the replacement of every single soldier killed in combat, so the batallions always had exactly 10,000 men. Thats why i said a medic promotion.

And that is true that in the sussadian empire they were cavarly, still, not a chariot, i just find the chariot such a pathetic unit.

I have found recently that with Beyond the Sword they actually gave chariots a purpose, namely axe rush and barbarians,

Immortals are one of the best UU's. Early, fast and cheap, plus a bonus against the unit the AI uses to defend its cities makes it one of the few units comparable to preats.

Then try using it in different ways. Immortals can be very powerfull. i.e. pillage an opponent early and then finish him later on when he is so backwards it is no problem.

Btw chariots can be really good, especially the egypt War chariot is sweet.

Hmmm, +50% against archers is ok, but that only takes it up to a 6, thats still not as good as a swordsmen who has 6.6 attacking a city, + city raider that jumps considerable.

And The pillage factor is OK, but 1-2 spearmen can stop a army of immortals...

And a normal chariot pillages fine, a immortal isn't needed, i still think immortal would have been better as a infantry unit.

Immortal is probably the best unit of the game with Praetorian. You can conquer 1-3 neighbors in the early game with 6-8 Immortals. If you are a bit lucky and fast enough, you can do it before they got spears.

Game designer decided to replace chariot by Immortal. it is indeed a bit odd. Immortal were Horseman or swordman and sometimes both, certainly not chariot. But the idea was to produce an ancient era unit and swordman (in CIV) is more like an early medieval unit.

historical accuracy is second priority to gameplay. Anyway, if you don't like the immortals you just aren't using them right - they are amazing. The key to using them is speed. You need to drop everything else and focus only on getting horses, linking it up, and spamming immortals. Then, rush over to your enemy and pillage any metals he has. Then you are assured victory over him. While fighting him you could rush over to another neighbour and pillage his metals too, allowing you to defeat two neighbours in an early rush. Without metal your enemy has no counter to the immortal.

Hmm, okok, i'll stop being critical and i'll try this tactic in my next game, i'll go persians and see how the immortals stack up.

But i'll be back if it doesn't work well :D

But then again in only about 50% of my games do i actually get horses in my land mass, so we'll see.

the immortals don't look like chariots, they just replace them. it is just to get them in the game earlier perhaps? Either way they are awesome, you get a bonus against half of the early game units.

 Are you kidding???

Immortals are imo the best UU. Certainly they are not weak.

Don't forget the immortal also gets to take advantage of defensive bonuses (unlike normal chariots). They are cheap, fast, and during their age a one unit offensive and defensive wreaking crew! Give em some love! :)

Dude, Immortals are a great unit. you attack with those and you opponent got no metal just archers their doomed. as to being a cavalry unit vs infantry, who really cares?

Be grateful it's not a Horse Archer, lol...
