Important question about Steam: Why are people freaking out about, spreading misinformation about, and spreading bizarre conspiracy theories about such an innocuous service?
I've been using Steam for years now and I have never had the slightest problem with it. Can someone clearly explain to me what it is about Steam that's got everyone shaking in a fit of rage and terror? It's a digital distribution service that has gradually added functionality over the last few years. Functionality including match-making, ingame chat, auto-updates, mods, and more. It doesn't bite I promise.
I don't know where all these bizarre conspiracy theories came from regarding Steam. Conspiracies asserting that Steam will: delete your games arbitrarily, scan your computer and transmit the data to ad agencies, delete your account if you violate their terms of service(they don't), etc. Others have also said that when you purchase a game through Steam it's somehow the equivalent of just renting the game rather than buying it(not sure how they came to that conclusion).
None of this stuff is true guys. Some people don't like the auto-updates for Mod related reasons, others don't like that it runs in the background and uses a minimum of system resources, but that's pretty much the extent of the LEGITIMATE concerns. You can play in off-line mode, and it wont kick you out of your game if your internet connection drops. It also has an orphan policy so in the event that they go out of business, you'll still be able to play your game(s).
The absolute furor on these forums is totally disproportionate to what Steamworks actually is and does. There are legitimate reasons for not loving Steam, but can we bring the conversation back down to earth please, and cease with the hysterical ravings and conspiracy theories?
