I am currently playing as the gaians. The Hive has surpassed my might by a lot. This is my first time playing on thinker and I started on a small island. Is it possible that I can still attack the Human Hive without getting ruined? I figure his forces must be spread out thin due to its size.

It's difficult to give specific advice without seeing your game. If you post a save file, some of the regulars may be able to help you.
Like Petek said it's hard to say without more information. How far into the game are you and has he surpassed you technologically or just in military/territory, what secret projects do you have under your belt? Also, can you make locusts of Chiron?
If you think you have the troops to rush in and believe his forces are thin enough right now I'd say give it a shot, At the very least if you take a base or two you can sit there and fish for the rest of his troops as he tries to re-claim the base.
