In Civ IV one of the coolest features introduced was the idea of events/in game happenings which altered what/how your Civ functioned and/or received bonuses.

Outside of the quests to build X # of such and such, the best/coolest/most practical was circumnavigation. In Civ II there was the wonder of Magellan's expedition, but this is hardly practical as the Civ did not research the expedition, rather it was the act which gave the Civ the advantage (in history that is). Thus I loved it when in Civ IV the first civ to actually travel around the world got the bonus of +1 movement to all navel units.

What other potential historical events could be actually built into the gameplay of Civ V?
(perhaps a better question)
What other potential historical events WOULD YOU LIKE to be built into the gameplay of Civ V?

It was mentioned somewhere else, but first to send an explorer to each pole would be cool. It might even make the unit worth building! As a bonus, +1 movement on land would be a bit much, but some sort of scientific bonus to the civ that achieves the feat would be consistent with real life. They did get to set up the first research labs (in the south pole at least). Maybe +2 beakers for each university you own? Or maybe you get a new happiness resource (penguins + associated disney movies).

The original Colonization had "The seven cities of Cibola" or something like that in a native village - gave you a bunch of gold. Also "The fountain of youth" caused a wave of immigrants to show up in europe. If city ruins are replacing goodie huts in civ5, maybe there is some sort of Indiana Jones archive you can find (the holy grail) or whatever, that gives you two free techs that someone already has.

First to break the sound barrier, or fly over the atlantic was pretty historical. I suppose having airports in two cities across an ocean could trigger the latter. Gives +1 range to all aircraft and 1000 beakers towards rocketry or something like that.

First to break the sound barrier founds another happiness resource (Street Fighter II Turbo video game)!

The thing that makes the circumnavigation idea work is that it represents a real commitment by the civilization in question to seafaring and a real commitment to exploration.

Something similar would be military dominator or something like this, where the civ that is first to conquer 2 other civs recieves a military bonus. It reflects a real commitment to conquest and military prowess.

Like quests that are always achievable by anyone? I like the idea.

Sorry to disagree, but it defeats the purpose when you see an AI get the feat with a fishing boat in the BC's. ;)

Welcome to civfanatics, IronDraconis!

To me, things like circumnavigating are fine, but I think it will be hard to come up with that many more if they cannot be related to civcrunavigating or reaching a tech first... Maybe things like first to antibiotics and first to get a calandar and such? Other than that I can think of little elase that one may do in civ-terms...

^Thats just ridiculous....

On a side note, one idea that came to mind was in the area of research-in Civ 2 the Golden Age of Philosophy was made out to be a big deal for the first to get Philosophy, the same was done in Civ 4 via the first civ to research Liberalism. Could a research based bonus apply to something such as diplomacy? this would be similar to what the great wall did in Civ 2 (forced cease fire offering) A military option to this could look something like:
First to discover gunpowder gains +1 Defensive power for all gunpowder units (the defensive part would make it so that the Civ wouldn't be able to go all nuts and wipe everyone out)
this would pretty clearly represent the effectiveness of Gunpowder armies V non gunpowder armies throughout history (Boar Wars/Spanish Conquests in the Caribbean and Mexico)

Another interesting one would be in the way of attaching great people to the event-Example:
First Civ to send Great Merchant to conduct trade mission would gain +2 trade routes in Capital city
This would represent Marco Polo and other large exploratory sales ventures and the fame/glory which boosted the economy of the merchants Capital city.

Yea, but that is easily fixed by (in unitinfos.xml)

Anyway, onto my point - I'd like to see world quests or something like that to act almost like world wonders. In civ II alot of the wonders were really just "actions"...like Marco Polo's embassy or Darwins voyage. Infact if you take a look at some of the civ II wonders
- King Richards Crusade = Liberating an independent city that was sacked by another civ
- Marco Polo's Embassy = First land unit to reveal atlantic and pacific oceans (well, if they're going to be able to differentiate Asian grasslands from European grasslands, they could differentiate the oceans as well)
- Magellan's Expedition = First civ around the world
- Darwin's Voyage = First civ to get a great scientist to travel around the world

These could all have benefits similar to wonders...Just come under a different title.

In Call to Power II there were some feats of wonder you could complete I only half remember a few but i liked them:

Via Appia: first to link 5 cities by road --> increased road movement
Circumnavigate the globe ---> increased sea movement

I think there were few related to buildin a vertain number of buildings, like 5 courthouses --> magna carta or something

Industrial Revolution?
First to build x factories get's an extra y production for all factories?

- Darwin's Voyage = First civ to get a great scientist to travel around the world

That's actually a really good idea IMO. It has some risk to it by the fact that you could very well lose the Great Scientist, and it's not something that you would do without thinking. So perhaps a fun little thing to discover?

These are great ideas, I love the sound of some of them. Subtle, small differences and bonuses awarded for making a commitment to a certain playstyle would definately add to replayability using different styles.

The concept was great, but the reality has been lacking. There is also the issue with map type for this particular feat. However, the intention is there.

Maybe it would be better to make some of these like a team project vice a wonder and remove the ability to get around the world in a fishing boat too.

I am with you on the gunpowder thing but I cant help but correct you it is beor not boar and which beor war would you be talking about the only beor war I know was between the english and the beors and that wasn't exactly gunpowder vs non-gunpowder.

They would have to make great scientists better though right now(at least to me) thay are the worst great prople. also they should die after they go around the world (or use their little power thing or whatever you call it).

^Whoops! My Bad Set! totally on top of your historical accuracy. The reference I am making to the Boer Wars is that the Dutch locals were able to be victorious over the English army thanks to GunPowder whereas other wars and uprisings up till the 18th century were largely unsuccessful when one power had Gunpowder and the other did not.

One idea for another built in historical event would be the use of an Explorer to find a previously un-Civ found Continent, this would provide use for the explorer unit which I have heard untold # of people complaining about. The Civ which found the Continent would instantly gain +1 settler in their capital city due to excitement/eagerness to colonize (there could even be a civic attached to this in some manner that would promote exploration and colonization)
Of course there are holes and perimeters such as: size of Continent, and I'm sure you can think of some as well.

The english won the beor wars bro

I like this, but i personally would just remove the explorer from the game and just have scouts skin change over time and have it so the first one to discover the new world on a terra map with any type of boat gets the reward.

^For all intensive purposes yes the English won, but it established a pattern of Rebellion and hope for the next 100 years of colonies breaking from the motherland.

I like the idea to just have scouts change over time.

first to flight anyone? That's a pretty big leap for mankind so to speak.

speaking of leap. The first man on the moon. Impossible to actually do this in game as there is no moon, however. But I'd like to see the space game spruced up some more anyways. Starting to build an intergalactic spaceship after researching rocketry is a bit far-fetched. You have to start somewhere. And that should involve putting up a satellite first, then manned space flight, then landing on an body other than Earth etc.

I'd like to see Emancipation expanded in game. Not just be a civic choice, but something you have to actively do in your cities. Perhaps have more unhappiness in cities that whipped alot, but those cities that did not whip enjoy a trade or population increase.
I'd like to see minor events.

For example the first city you conquer should give our civilization a happy boost.

Or defending your city from a siege would cause your empire to enjoy a military production boost. This would involve making siege mechanics more involving of course.

The first empire you subjugate should definately give a boost. But you wouldn't want this mechanic to be too powerful or military civs could steamroll. So basically each empire after the first to subjugate would cause a penalty in some way (other than in game models of corruption etc.)
