In what order do you promote your heroes?

Unless you're dealing with a weak strength hero (5 or less), I NEVER bother with heroic strength/defense. It's just vastly inferior to almost any other upgrade you can get.

I usually don't touch cover or shock until combat, drill, and commando are maxed out, and even then I usually go with blitz and mobility (for slow starting heroes).

I'm personally fond of March. Saves a lot of turns healing when I could be rampaging more.

I think this is not really true. You're not taking into account the fact that the Heroic promotions increase BASE strength, which then gets modified again by all the other promos. Let's take the example of Saverous, a standard midgame hero with 7 base strength. Assume that he already has Combat V (otherwise Heroic Strength wouldn't even be an option). Now you need to choose between HS, and something like City Raider or Shock (let's ignore Drill for now because it's less easy to compare).

CR gives +2.1 strength (.3*7) when attacking cities
Shock gives +2.8 strength (.4*7) when fighting melee
Heroic Strength gives +2 strength (+1*200% from Combat V) when attacking any unit.

Heroic Strength is thus competitive because it's not as situational, AND it can also be boosted by later CR/Shock promos you take. In essence, CR and Shock/Cover give strong additive bonuses. Heroic Strength gives a weak bonus, but that bonus is multiplicative instead of additive, and it can thus be stronger than most other promos.

How DOES first strike get calculated anyway? It's easy to see the benefits of other bonuses, but first strikes remain a mystery.

I'm playing in bizarro world, where my Elohim have adopted the Veil and brought in Hyborem, who colonized the new world (Terra Map), and an Order-following coalition led by the Clan of Embers/Basium have been constantly at war with me.

Because I could not trade with anyone, I am teching very slowly, and I just found out that I have no Mithril and will not have it until the game is a wash. Rosier the Fallen with Blitz, Combat V, both Mobilities, and both heroic attacks is my "will definitely kill stoneskin ogres with mithril weapons" unit...

I guess the thread-relevant point is that blitz plus five movement points is pretty sweet.

I still haven't had to play the "Sanctuary" card, but if the newly-mithril-equipped Malakim invade me, it might be time!

This mod rules.
