Indian City Names

Hey everyone, I haven't been active on these boards for a while. I still have been playing plenty of civ though. I was wondering if anyone could help me find a list of all the Indian civ's city names.

I guess I should check my world news more often, but I just just found out that in 97' the Indian Parliament changed the city name "Bombay" to "Mumbai." I don't play as Ghandi or Asoka much and just want to know if CivIV says Mumbai. Also I would like to know how to change the city name through the game files (if it is listed as Bombay). Thanks for any help!

Take a look in the CivilizationInfos.xml file: it is in the standard directory of Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Warlords\Assets\XML\Civilizations.

This will give you the names in all caps. In different languages, you would have to go into the ...\XML\Text files and find it somewhere in there. I don't know where it is, but good luck!

EDIT: I'm pretty sure it says Bombay.

Does the game already have Calcutta as Kolkata, Madras as Chennai etc. or does Bombay have some special significance for you?

I just played a game to find out for sure...CivIV has Bombay, Calcutta, and Madras instead of Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai..I am going to try to mess around with the game files to try to fix this. Any more advice on how to do this would be helpful.

Lucky AC, thanks for pointing out that Calcutta and Madras were officially changed too! I feel a bit ignorant not knowing about such world events. Do you know of any more that have changed to reflect more Indian meanings?

Antilogic, thanks for you help as well.

EDIT: I fixed the game files....I had to hit EDIT instead of just opening the XML file.

Do remember that it's likely that the cities referred to will be founded, in the game, several thousand years before the modern changes were made, so the original names are somewhat more appropriate. And city names can easily be changed in-game if you want to; just click on the name in the city screen.
The city name lists show some peculiarities which peeve me mildly. There are only 26 English names (the last one, The Mumbles, is not only a small place but in Wales) and 20 French ones, but 61 American and 63 German. Was it not anticipated that many people would choose to play one of the three English leaders or either of the French ? Or use these only on smaller maps ? I see from the notes I made a while ago that there are also 64 names for barbarian cities (has anyone, ever, let so many be built ?), 63 Persian, and 50 Indian, whilst Mali at 19 has the fewest of those I counted. Even among the civ-listed English cities there are several curious choices: two listed are not among our 1000 largest. according to the World Gazetteer, and the list omits 14 of the 27 largest - most notably our 5th largest, Sheffield.

Well, I haven't looked into it, but I don't think Calcutta is an original name, either.

How can I edit this script? I usually play as the Spanish, and the designers' choice of cities is skewed, and some such as Asturias and Mida, aren't cities (Asturias is a province, Mida might be Merida?). I found the file and don't know how to make changes...

Monado, check out this page for an interesting read concerning the renaming of certain Indian cities.

That was a very interesting article. It would seem that the name changes really aren't all that logical.

If you're on a Windows box you can get EditPad Lite for free.

It's a program that makes Windows Note Pad into a much more effective text editor.

Make a backup copy of any file that you're going to edit, follow the format of the existing file. As long as you have that backup copy you won't permanently hose your installation if you make a mistake.

Hmm...I use the free Altova XMLSpy. It's a solid program, it color-codes and auto-completes tags, it's great.

What you have to do is create a copy of the XML/Text file that contains the city names, and place it in your CustomAssets folder (this prevents you from permanently damaging your copy of the game if you mess it up). Then, edit this new copy by changing the name of the cities you want to change in the file, and then save it.

It's not too hard...it's just a matter of finding the file. I don't quite know where it is, but just open up the files and look around. By the way, you can do this all with Notepad if you don't want to get a new program.
