Infernal Lords - who are they, where do they come from, why are there so many, and how do you kill the bloody things?

I'm playing my first game taking over as Basium. I have played a few Fire games and came up against Hyborem, but I don't remember having to deal with Infernal Lords like this.

1. I saw a couple at Counter 700 (about yr. 500 in my Epic/Prince game) when the Hell Holes opened up. There were a couple of Balors with them. They were tough, but I killed them with some strong angels I had.

2. Fast forward about 50 turns and the map is loaded with them. I counted 24 and I am sure there were more hidden I could not count. I do not understand this as the Civlopedia says the Infernal Lord is a National Unit with a limit of 3. Basium can handle one, but they are coming in stacks with 3-4 in them. Even my strongest Angels are having problems. They are mowing down AI civs who are defending with Hunters, Axemen, Chariots, the occasional Ranger, etc. No other Tier IV units are in the game yet.

3. Where do they come from? Again, the Civlopedia says you cannot build them, they need to be Level 6 already. Yet, somehow the Infernal has loads of them and they keep appearing even after you kill them.

4. How do you kill them? I sent Basium to take an Infernal city with 2 defenders. When he arrived there was an Infernal Lord there too. I killed him. Next turn another Infernal Lord, next another, you get the idea. OK, they have the Immortal promotion, but I thought that only worked once. Also, with no roads or access to the city, how do they keep appearing in the SAME city? Teleporting in?

5. Finally, I just don't get the Infernal economy. He has about 12 cities, I have 9. I counted more than 140 Infernal units and I am sure there were some I could not see. He had at least 7 defenders in each city, at least 7 units on visibile Hell Holes, and a number of roving stacks again with at least 7 units. I had about half this number of units. I had to lower my research to 50% to have a gold loss in the minus 30 range. I have built all the financial improvements, I doubt if Hyborem has. Yet, he has all those units and still manages to show a small amount of gold each turn. How does that work?

Sorry for my denseness and maybe I am missing something by just reading the Civlopedia and playing my first game with Basium.

PS. One more - the city I took over from the Kuriotates, who I was playing, had the Catacomb Libralus in it. Still, my new cities are required to build Mage Guilds - I don't understand that one.

Thanks.

Infernal units can teleport, since they get free Obsidian Gate structures in cities they found: That might be the cause of the re-appearing defender lord, though I have no idea about the rest.

Infernal Lords, like normal Immortals, regain their immortality promotion one turn after being reborn. Therefore, you can only destroy them by killing them twice in the same turn.

It's weird that Hyborem has such large stacks of them, though. In earlier versions they'd just spawn out of hellfire tiles, but I think the team wanted to implement a check to limit the maximum number of Infernal Lords that can be created this way. Maybe the check doesn't work, or it isn't even implemented yet?

Playing as the Hyborem, after pushing the Armageddon counter over 70, I had Infernal Lords spawing at the Hell Holes, regularly. I soon was over 3, and they kept appearing...

Ah this seems a pretty bad bug to me then...

You got the Arm. counter up to 700!?!?!

It would be good if ppl could post what happens at various Arm. counts...

I should always proof my post before sending it...

I noticed two typos in it. Of course, that should have been a Counter 70.

Also, although at times it seemed like there were 24 infernal lords, it was ONLY 14.

Yes, you are right about the 'immortal' tag they have.

The only way I was able to kill them off was...

Sent two stacks of angels, Basium and confessors at their last city where they had 8 infernal lords. Very stupidly they had the other 6 out protecting the last hell hole.

I was able to slip one stack adjacent to the city. I used the fire spell from 4 confessors (surprised fire would affect infernal lords) to weaken the defenders. But, I still had to kill each infernal lord TWICE as well as the rest of the units to send Hyborem packing.

Yes, IMO, the infernal is getting too many infernal lords. I think the national limit as described in the civlopedia should be working.

Also, I'm not sure about the way he gets the units - again, the civlopedia says they must be upgraded from unit 6 or higher. Of course, Basium can get some powerful spirit gifts as angels too.

He definitely gets them out of hellfire tiles. However, there shouldn't spawn more than 3. Maybe this should be mentioned in the bug thread so that the dev team is aware of this issue.

an easy(ish) solution is to get a bunch of high preists or seraphs and cast pillar of fire on any stacks you see. if you cast 2 or 3 it should be able to obliverate any demon stack

They must be aware of it. I'm pretty sure Kael mentioned he reads every post in the Forum, but I guess you are right that it should be in the bug thread.

Yes. I mentioned that it was effective using the fire spell of lowly Confessors in bringing their strength down.

The problem was that after you killed them, they seemed to be reborn elsewhere. I solved that problem when they were down to only one city and I had most of them in one place. They were easier to kill.

Again, I was surprised when fire damaged Hyborem/demon units.

another thing to do is park yourself outside their capital while you work on glory everlasting. all the demons die then you obliberate them again, bye bye infernal lords and then you can kill hybo reeeeally easy

Man, you must be playing the game at a different speed than me. I play at Epic and it seems like those rituals always take me 200 - 300 turns so I never try them.

Thanks for the tip, though!
