Perhaps a cosmetic change to oceans? Set them on fire.. maybe make them burn ships? ;)

Too much "fire effect" can cause problems for some graphics cards. Altering the colour of the hell-ocean and hell-coast is easy, but the oceans don't have much in the way of blending, so you end up with "dark squares and light squares" with straight edges in between (I did try to do it using only a lightness shift once - functional, but quite ugly).

The original oceans weren't designed to have anything other than coast adjacent to them, so they don't normally need to handle other terrain types (such as hell-ocean). There'd be a fair bit of artwork involved to correct that.

And what if hell oceans are made of acid? You just have to make them green and they can burn ships too ;)

Perhaps rather than damage (a little too annoying if you ask me) perhaps hell ocean/coast could slow or immobilise non-AV ships stuck in it.

Hell oceans have been discussed in the past. I believe the main problem involving them was not changing the ocean tiles, but changing the rivers. It is difficult, if not impossible, to have rivers change color, as they are not tiles.

A really nice graphic for a corrupted ocean was made for another project. It had a green, brackish color, if I recall correctly. Someone pointed out it would work well for hell ocean. But it would look odd without changing rivers.

Aye - the green one is really good, as is the purple. I figured that keeping it blue, but noticeably darker would let me get away with the rivers, but the straight edges stood out too much.

I think Sevon05's world piece mod has 'Deep Ocean' which is a darker ocean. It seems to blend quite nicely, although you would also need a darker coast. Another thing that might be ok is a subtle churning or boiling particle effect, although you would have to watch the framerate.

That sounds like it'd work nicely - it just needs something that includes the blend tiles.

For low framerate you could aim for something "tar-like" which will just have an occasional bubble-plop.

Yeah, just something to indicate that something not normal is going on down there.

The teams big problem with hell's oceans is that it is impossible to have multiple types of rivers, and it would look odd to have normal light blue rivers flowing into hellish, blood- or lava- like seas. I personally think that it makes sense for rivers to be removed when the land becomes hall (I would like to pair this with making the spring spell create new rivers, maybe only if it miscasts), and often point out that hell's oceans don't have to be like that.

Hell's Ocean is already mentioned in the Civilopedia (Wraith Entry), and described as being jet black, totally still, and reflecting stars not of creation. I still think it should appear that way.

I believe it has also been pointed out that (because of some things that are hard coded) it is also impossible to have multiple typoes of seas; however, there is nothing stopping them from adding a new feature to cover hell's ocean. I remember some talk a while back of introdicing a "tar" type feature (like Ice, but black), but it hasn't made it in the game yet. I'm still hoping for a black feature with the reflections of oddly colored stars twinkling on it.

There should probably be one to cover oceans and another for coasts, which should blend together. I also think that Hell's oceans having a more OO theme might be good.

Whatever happened to the obsidian plains? I thought floodplains when under hell terrain influence turned into these in the past? Instead they just become burning sands...

Obsidian planes exist, but since they are a feature that only occur on Burning Sands --which randomly spawn the flames feature--they don't last long.

in real life, the colors of rivers and oceans can vary aswell, expecially when the two meet. And besides, it's the ocean that's corrupted, not the mountain/rain water now is it?
