i have civ 3 game of the year edition and i want conquers but can i atach it straight away or do i need the first expansion

I thought the game of the year came with PTW which is the first expansion.

Nope, the GOTY edition of Civ3 is the regular Civ3 game patched to the last level, 1.29f.

If you want Conquests, just buy Conquests. It does include most of the PTW content, as well as the executable for PTW. There are a couple of minor files that aren't included that can be downloaded here.
