so, i recently installed civ 4 again, and warlords, and beyond the sword, and i have patch 1.74 in for civ and 3.17 in for BTS, but when i try to start the game, the loading screen loads until "init xml (uncached)' and the program just crashes back to my desktop. how come i can't play civ anymore?

none at all. it just gets to that step and crashes to the desktop. i think i might just have to try a reinstall and hope for the best :S

tried reinstalling... same thing happening. though it only happens after i put the 3.17 patch in. no patch, and the game runs fine. and no, there's no error. it will load until init xml (uncached) and then it will just close. so frustrating.

yes i have the same problem as robotco. The same exact thing happened to me. It worked until i patched. then I had the whole Direct X issue. that issue turned into a shader librarie problem then into this problem. It randomly fixed itself and i was fine for a long while until i had to reinstall windows xp on my computer. I foresaw the old problems and fixed them up until the init xml (uncached) crash. I am stumped.

I have the same problem, game works fine until U update it and then it crashes on start. And yes windows produces an error report for it.

thanks for the fast reply.

Error report is an very, very long serie of numbers and letters, which is not copyable and.... I'm not quite sure what in there is worthy of being reported here, maybe you could give me an hint? :mischief:

when you click on show report the window that opens has an upper part that includes some numbers and filenames and a lower part with a lot more information and a scroll bar - what I would like to see is a screenshot of just the upper part (or just the error report window without scrolling down)...

ok here it us, hope it works

I have seen this error once before - and at that time we did not find a solution. but please try the following:

please open:
documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4\civilizationIV.ini
and change the follwowing entries so that they look as posted:

; Set to 1 for no python exception popups
HidePythonExceptions = 0

; Enable the logging system
LoggingEnabled = 1

; Enable synchronization logging
SynchLog = 1

; Overwrite old network and message logs
OverwriteLogs = 1

; Enable rand event logging
RandLog = 1

; Enable message logging
MessageLog = 1
then start a Civ4 game and crash it. then post the following as a zip file:
all contents of:
documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4\logs\

I've got you covered ori.

Edit: ignore my previous comment - that was some weird glitch on my computer

now for the logs: they do not contain any (meaningful) error messages - this looks identical to the one instance where this error code occurred to my knowledge before - unfortunately I do not know what triggers this :sad:

Well thanks a lot anyway for taking all this time to try and help, it is very much apreciated. I'm not sure where to turn for help now tho! Worst case scenario I'll just reinstall it and play the not updated game. Thats what i find strange, it works fine until I update it! I wonder if it would work if I bought and installed BTS, but I'm not sure I want to take the risk :x

Thanks again ori !
