Where do you want to put that 1st city?
Don't name 10 specials in the city squares.

I'll take on a forest/silk/river square.
That's not a rare thing.

Where do you want to put it?
I wasn't asking for statements of the obvious.

Grasslands astride a river on the coast with some forest squares would be my first choice. If there are bonuses like a pheasant or silk, so much the better. Also, the longer the river the better. But you have to explore to know that.

Buzzzzz. Wrong answer.
Put it ON the river. If you don't, you're giving back defense and trade.

Next?

Of course, it's even better if the square you found your city in doesn't have a shield, since cities always produce a shield. I consider it a waste if I have to pur a city on a shield square.

You're an idiot HIER.

All you need for the quickest start imaginable is 1 ocean square, 1 grassland square, and 1 forest. That's all. Optimally a whale would be best obviously. But for the first city that's all you need. Each turn you spend searching for a city is equal to 2 turns in the long run unless you find a hut or a really good spot to make up for lost time. Safer to play the more conservative route. I wouldn't go more than 4 turns.

I have to agree with eyes here, accept for the cussing though:
You do not need a special, but if you dont see one, or a hut, it is wise to wander a little, but not too long. All you need is huts. it doesnt matter if your first city isnt placed too well, because you will find settlers and advanced tribes in huts. If you are not close to a science producing special, put your first worker on the sea untilll you discover horseback riding, then put everything on forrest and build lots of horses.

The bad start location will be made up for extra settlers and cities that you find. The longer you wait on settling your city, the longer it takes before you can produce units and find huts.

whales are very important in the early game because they provide all three recources .
a whale + a second special resource some grassland and some forest will be a good starting point .
Often such a location can be found in a few moves .

I more than disagree on this. With hundreds of years pass, you ****** development, not improve.
I'll build immediately, unless I see something extremely promising.

Now, here's another question which should perhaps start a new thread, but since it is related to the present topic, I've included here.

Has anyone, besides me, ever considered moving their capital for reasons other than they lost the first? For instance, if once you start expanding, you find a better site than your original capital, would you build a palace there?

RMeigs, I have done that, although later in the game - in fact you cannot build a new capital until you have the Masonry tech.

Once I find the Super Science City Site, I make that my capital , because there is no corruption. That problem can also be solved with the Communist government, but that's an awfully long time to be losing all those trade arrows, especially if every other city is trading with the SSC.

Having King Richard's, Colossus, & Shakespeare's in your capital (the SSC) can be amazing. (Pollution be damned!)

I frequently consider it... tho less frequently do it... a lot depends on the strategic considerations .. like where my neighbors are... & the overall pace of the game. It's nice to eliminate a lot of the corruption by having a well-centered capital, but if the pace of the game is real fast other things might take a higher priority.

The game often places you on a headland.. & you have to expand in one direction away from your capital city.

Oh.. Magnus, I hope we are talking about multiplayer here.
