Initial Reactions

Why couldn't they just do a new Civ4, upgraded the graphics, add some new stuff and some of the few good things from Civ5 and then released the game? It would have been awesome. :crazyeye:

Fundamentally, because it's likely that Civ V has been by far the most popular entry in the series - Civ IV didn't have Steam figures during its main release period, but Civ V has been among Steam's most-played games since its release.

Secondly, Master of Orion shows the danger of taking a great but outdated game, updating the graphics, and (re)releasing it without changing very much else. If the latest MOO had been published in place of MOO 3, it would have been hailed as the pinnacle of the series. Now it's not even discussed in the MOO section of these forums - it's nicely nostalgic, surprisingly well-executed for what it is, but it feels fundamentally basic and outdated.

Civ IV was a fine game, but fixing everything that was wrong (health, I'm looking at you), unpopular (stacks of doom), or just an inefficient, overly basic relic of an outdated design (sliders) would result in something that's barely recognisable as Civ IV anyway, never mind anything added from Civ V that improves on what Civ IV was doing (religion, gold economy, trade) or is entirely new (archaeology, ideology - and while I dislike the way Civ V implemented the latter, it's been confirmed as a returning feature in Civ VI). Few people pining for Civ IV are pining for the game as Firaxis released it - how many people are playing it without mods?

Ryuu Falconwing,

Would really be interested to hear what the developers have to say about the art design choice. In the coming weeks. Maybe it does have its advantages. Gameplay always comes before graphics for strategy games anyway. There is a reason why i still prefer civ 4 over civ 5.

To be fair my hatred towards the 3 screenshots/art style have been cooled down a good bit. After reading more about civ 6 i get more exited. Civ seems to be heading just were i want it to be. It might be because of the console/mobile adventures of past civ games. I feel a strong hated towards any effort towards dumbing down to make the game fit towards mobile/console. It is pretty reassuring the game is developed just for pc. So that is a very good thing.

The game comes out in a few months and the thing they tease with is barebones looking concept art? I really doubt it.

We're well into the 'Early Access' era of game design, and one thing that seems clear is that the basic graphical design of most games is in place prior to open alphas - I doubt they'd have made the announcement until they had something close to the final graphical style. Colour saturation would take about a minute to fix; the fact that the game looks like Age of Empires Online would require a complete reworking to correct.

I do like the art style and it have been mentioned that the art style make it easy to see which type each district like pink buildings mean it is a culture district and blue buildings mean it is a science district.

The key takeaway here is that by sticking to hexes, 1upt and bringing over features from Civ5 BNW they are building on lessons learned. So I believe them on points like improved AI and diplomacy.

Civ5 suffered from a lot of growing pains. Though the final product is IMHO a fantastic 4x game, best in the franchise, a cursory read here still see lots of posters reverting to their vanilla civ5 experience and extrapolating it to civ6. It's unfair to be sure but it's worth noting civ6 will not suffer those problems. The devs are much more familiar with the 1upt and In crafting a game that works with hexes , 1upt , and city states. I cannot wait to see city states 2.0

Of course it has advantages and they were pointed out in Graphics thread. Both models and color codes are designed for easy distinguish things from each other from above. Like huge swords on swordsmen, blue roofs on science district, etc. Less time to see the situation = more comfortable play; easier distinguished features = ability to play while zoomed out further.

And, honestly, I believe most of the players will get accustomed to the graphics soon.

Civ V had unit icons to distinguish units - if they want to aid ease of recognition dropping these doesn't seem a good idea, especially as there will undoubtedly be continuing bloat in the number of unit types and more unique units that barely look different from the generic versions. And the districts are basically a new system of tile improvements - if tile improvements and forests could be distinguished under the old system it's not clear how making the trees more conical is going to make it any more obvious a tile represents a forest than the Civ V models.

Pleased to see the game will be coming out soon! It's been too long without a new Civ!

Not sure how I feel about cities that are spread over multiple tiles. That's a departure from the standard Civ experience. Might be good though.

Graphics look cartoon-eske and I'm not too keen on them compared to Civ5, but this can easily change in the coming months and I could get used to a visual change as long as it's pretty enough.

Overall I am pleased to see another Civ game on the horizon, but worried they'll mess it up, or put something like BE out that looks good on paper but doesn't offer very inspiring play in reality.

Here's hoping it turns out well!

Great. Now the game will look like London in November.

I saw it on Four-chan, which might not be the best source since that's where I also found this:

That was quick. I'm glad they are listening.

Not sure if seeing a barrage of negative feedback and responding by describing the art as a "new, fresh direction" qualifies as listening in any positive sense - it doesn't fill me with confidence that they realise it was the wrong approach for the game.

It was also the most hated Civ by veterans. It seems it just pulled a WotLK and attracted a whole new generation of players who weren't actually interested in a Civ to begin with, and which ended up replacing the veterans.

From what I've read, the problem with the latest MOO is precisely that they DIDN'T just updated the graphics, they gutted a lot of the core gameplay. I can't have any definitive opinion here as I haven't played either, but that's what I read in the reviews when I was wondering to buy it on GoG.
If you find it on that site you should think is fake before even considering it may be real.

Source: Personal experience.
It was still hilariously spot-on
After the Windows-like design of Civ4, they went for a console-like look for Civ5, and now they're switching to a mobile-like design for Civ6. Maybe Civ7 will finally go back to an immersion-based interface ? ^^

Can you link me to this tweet? I am unable to find it in the actual twitter account
EDIT: And twitter no longer uses favorites/stars, they switched to likes/hearts

And the image has the text "Civilization VI" in link color for no reason, I think.

I am thinking it is fake. I don't see it anywhere on the civilization twitter page. Plus the fact that the pic has "stars" instead of "hearts" like a real twitter page woule have, tells me it is not real.
