Although this tip will seriously drain your treasury if you cannot afford extra units, it will make you ALWAYS the agressor if you have a chain of entire islands all to yourself.
First, build a fortress on every square adjacent to a sea tile. Next, plan out what units you will use on the fortresses.

If an enemy civilization uses Marines for attacks, there is a 95% chance that they will attack a city. However, Marines are very weak against Infantry and Mech Infantry. Place atleast 2 of each in a city, and the Marines will not take that city. However, the fortress system is effective even if the enemy utilizes Marines because the Fortress system does not allow the enemy to drop troops onto the island.

If the enemy civilization uses Berserkers, there is a good chance that they will attack by sea and slaughter any spearman/pikeman in their way. If so, do not abandon a fortress system. The fortress system prevents other civilizations from landing stronger troops on the island in greater numbers.

To prevent Berserker attacks, place sea units (3-5) all on the same tile near a route the Vikings generally use to reach your islands. Beware, because any enemy civilization will attack the weakest islands first, then the stronger ones, so place the units around weaker islands. Next, wait until a Viking ship is spotted. When you see a Viking ship, send ships out and try to destroy it. There is a 99% chance that the Viking ship will sink, even if you are using galleys and he has a galleon/frigate.

Remember, even if you see that your fortress system is not being attacked, DO NOT ABANDON IT. Always keep backup defensive fortress units and offensive units to destroy any troops that may have surpassed the fortress system.

All in all, the main idea of the fortress system is to have a chain of islands all to yourself from which you can launch any amount of attacks from without fear of being attacked in return. I assure you that you will see atleast 5 ships approach your island during wartime, and, if they are able to see the fortress system, will turn around and sail back to their country.

I know that many people might call this "cheating", but it is definitely not. The fortress system comes with a heavy price tag, sometimes around 500 gold/turn, if you are protecting 5-6 continents. Also, this strategy has its flaws. If you forget to arm even 1 tile, the enemy will see that tile and land an insurmountable amount of troops on it.

I wish you good luck and remember; be prepared for naval attacks, and you will be the boss of the sea. :king:
