Inquisitor use

I have used inquistors in the past but recently in the past couple games have noticed some problems.
When a neighbor shows up with a prophet and converts my holy city, buying an inquisitor and bulbing him inside the city has no effect. Nor does moving the inquistor outside the city and then bulbing?

What gives? Do I have to go and get a great prophet to remove their religion from my city since they converted all the citizens?

If you're buying an Inquisitor in the city which was just converted, then it will be an Inquisitor for the new religion. You'll need to buy an Inquisitor in a city which still follows your desired religion.

What you really need to do is buy an Inquistor BEFORE your holy city was converted. If keep him there (or one tile next to it) for the passive benefit.
I tend to buy one right after enhancing my religion while these units are still only 200/300 faith.

Note that the AI tends to keep his Great Prophet in your territory for the rest of the game when you do this, apparently in hopes that you'll move the inquisitor elsewhere.

I wonder if this was intentional and was made to get crusades rolling...

Because most time I'll just nab that Great Prophet and if it hasn't been converting stuff, I'll plant it as a holy site somewhere safe.

Sometimes the game within the game is shuffling your inquisitors between cities while heathen prophets and missionaries run from city to city trying to find an opening.

For multi player, it would be. But on Single Player, the AI locks onto a single city as a target, usually your capital, but sometimes another one and so just moving it to their target city is sufficient.

No, they definitely switch target cities if you have inquisitors and other stuff blocking them, so it definitely does become a game of shuffle movement

In my experience, the prophets/missionaries are more likely to linger around one city (usually the capital), so both are certainly possible.

I've never seen the AI switch target cities when I've blocked them; it just did partual semi-circles around the target.

I give them one warning, and then go crusading.

This is what I have seen too. One Inquisitor is enough if you leave him resting in your holy city.

So leaving the inquistor one tile away from your city exerts an influence, stopping others from spreading their religion? Do you press the sleep button and just leave him there?

Put him to sleep either in the city or in an adjacent tile.
