Insert correct CD-ROM...

Hi there,

After Installing the Game on my Desktop (1,8GHz P4, 768 MB RAM, ATI Radeon 9000) and starting the Game i only get the Message "Please insert correct CD-ROM" (or so...).

Yes, i DID buy the Game, and: Yes the correct Disc is in the Drive btw: it's a DVD - and since i own a CD-Toaster and a DVD-ROM there's no Choice in which Drive i have to put it...)

Yes, i did put the DVD indeed into the DVD-ROM...

Next: the drive-letters: CD-burner was G:, DVD was H:
After some research i changed that to DVD:H and CD-Burner:I

No result. The DVD-busy-light does blink for a very short moment at the Start of the Game, but it does not start to run.

Yes, it DOES still work... at least a reinstall of CIV4 was possible...:sad:

Since the Game runs smooth (more or less) on my Laptop, i'm under no pressure here...
But it would be nice, if it worked on that Desktop....

anybody any ideas ????

but (of course...) i've been there, seen that...

They just say: take out CD2, insert CD1, try again.
Since i have just one DVD, it's obviously not the answer....

Oops :eek: Sorry I am a bit tired and you did say dvd in your previous post. Best of luck though.

Mine does exactly the same. I have the DVD version and have tried it in both of my DVD drives and it comes up with Please Insert the Correct CD-ROM. Please can anyone help, I wanna play!!!!!
 
i had the same problem with my copy of the game. $50 was freshly spent and my game would not start. However I did find a workaround cure to this problem until someone at 2k fixes it completely. You need to find a program called "sd4hider." It seems that the safedisk protection that is installed with the game is stoping you from being able to start it. This is good for people who pirated the game, but bad for folks like you and me who actually bought it. Anyways, find the "sd4hider" program, download it, and place it on your desk top. Run the hider and hit the "HIDE" button (this will become clear to you once you get it). Once you have the "HIDE" key pressed go ahead and attempt to start the game from the start menu. Once you are done playing the game go back into "hider" and hit the "RESTORE" key. Enjoy the game.

Yeah, I ran into the same problem. Their customer support is ********... insert cd1... sigh... you MORONS, I have ONE DVD!!!


Apparently there is an anti-piracy program installed on the disc, which checks whether you have programs like daemon tools or clone cd on your system. After I removed daemon tools it DID work for me... it really bothers me though. They only hurt the honest customers with ****ty software like this, because usually those illegal warez monkeys already have their hands on some file to work their way around this copy protection anyway!


I rarely even use daemon tools for piracy anyway (if downloading software tools to use for student purposes is even piracy to begin with). That is like banning people with 2 hands from a store, because you CAN use your hands to steal.

Thank for your help, I know this is going to sound stupid but do you know where i can get this program from
 
I had this problem (with the 2 cd US version) - I rebooted my machine and after that the game loaded fine. Worth a try anyway
 
I decided to unistall loads of software and i have finally got it running i think it was Sonic DVD causing the prob but having unistalled half my system i am not amused!!!
 
My copy of Civ4 arrived this morning, and after installing I'm getting the same error!

GRR! I'd cleared the whole day so that I could play Civ4 before my better half drags me away this evening.

I assume this is some sort of copy-protection problem?

I've fired a missive off to the official tech support, but I've had no reply so far.

Oh well, at least I've got this weighty tome to plough through while I wait for a fix...

Same problem here (with DVD edition). Rebooting solves it for me. I mean a real reboot, not hibernating (which apparently causes this problem).

It's illegal so I cannot suggest you to copy your DVD onto your hard disk, mount the image as virtual drive and hide the safe disc 4 protection with a particular utility (it works only for virtual drivers :rolleyes: ).
Copy your DVD on your hard disk, even if you have bought it, is illegal but it's the only way in theory to disable sd4 protection without having your DVD in the drive.
So I cannot tell you this method or the name of the safe disc 4 hider utility ...;)
 
I have the 2 CD version and after reading about the problem, swapping disk 1 for 2, I went about trying to upgrade my CD firmware. Totally hosed the CD.
OK says I, time for a new CD-Rom anyway.
Installed new drive, uninstalled the game, reinstalled it, and voila, it played.
So, I went to lunch, came back and got the same bloody wrong-CD error.
Went into MSCONFIG, disabled everything, and it started at least until the next time I tried to play it.
Now the only things I have running are AVG and Spywareguard.
Still have the problem, but if I reboot, I can play it.

I know for a fact that there are PLENTY of issues all caused by the "copy protection" crap that is built into CivIV.

I have my own story to relate, but I don't have the time to go into it right now (I'm at work). I will check back here later and relay some very revealing findings. Suffice it to say, that I have spent FIVE DAYS fighting a myriad of issues that have ocurred during Install/Start-up/Play. Atrocious. All to stop people from copying the game. When, as mentioned above, these hackers WILL FIND A WAY. It's what they do. Meanwhile, honest people (which includes ME), who have spent hard-earned cash ($50 and up) have been put through torment. I'm disgusted.

My solution does not involve "sd4hider", but I'm not out of the dark yet and so I might have to implement it if the remainder of my plan doesn't pan out.

The only thing that a copy protection nowadays prevents is easy copies for using the game at home or distributing it to your friends in your direct area. This may still be a way of distributing pirated copies among the 40% or so in the United States that uses dial-up, but the copy protection is not working for those getting pirated copies of the internet.

I totally understand the need to protect the work they have done and to maximize the amount of copies sold in stores, and to minimize the amount of illegal copies sold for $5 on schools or sportsclubs. But in my opinion there are better ways of doing that then rigging the CD full of copy protections or the need to load the CD every time you play.

Illegal copies will be made either way. I am betting you anything that right at this very moment illegal DVD's of Civilization IV with SD4HIDE.EXE included and a small instruction sheet are being distributed on schools, colleges, sportsclubs, and neighbours all over the world.

The Copy protection on CD's stops that for about 48 hours. Thats how long on average it takes for someone to come up with a hack, workaround, keygen or whatever to play an illegal copy of the game.

After a week of battling with the Orginal CD, I finally used SD4HIDE to not have to insert the friggin CD every time I switch from one computer to the other and it seems to work fine so far.

What annoys me more then anything is the attitude of gaming companies, which is more or less like "You will play our game and therefore you need to leave our CD in the drive".

Well I play about 4 or 5 different games right now - whatever mood I am in - and I am using NO-CD cracks for each and every one of them because I am simply sick and tired to have to switch CD's every flippin time I want to play another game.

Maybe they need Activation, just like Windows? Maybe make it so that you can't download patches unless you have a "Genuine Copy" just like with Microsoft Windows?

I don't know what the solution is, but I think all the copy protections currently in place cost a lot more money to implement then what they would lose if they didn't implement them....
 
Sometimes setting game shortcut to Win2k compatibility mode helps. I think Win2k provides less features to find whether it is a real drive or not.
 
You all might have to wait for the NO-CD crack to come out. I know they're usually used by pirates, but I'm one of the few who installs them for all games I purchase because I hate fumbling around my messy desk for the right CD. You get NO-CD patches at www.gamecopyworld.com and I wager the Civ4 patch will be on there soon.

There are legal uses for the stuff you get there, so I hope it doesn't count as posting a piracy site. If it does just delete this post mods.
