Insight to Prebuilding (only for newbies)

"The AI rarely goes for GL during Emperor"

Last week i've finished a game where i got a SGL with Military Tradition.... and i've rushed the GL.. On F7 no AI was building it... 8)

You shall be quickly disillusioned. Alpha Centauri is harder.

I managed to get Colossus in GOTM 51 (though admittedly I was playing Conquest class); on the other hand it was the only Wonder I got in that game; on the other other hand I'm nowhere near the same league as some of the players we have here. If some (as according to the HoF) can get 20000 point Cultural wins at Demigod level, then even then they had to build a metric boatlaod of wonders.

I beg to disagree.

On my second attempt at Transcend level I won without using more than two crawlers throughout the whole game and spacing my cities no less than three or 4 tiles from each other (sledge hammer builder style).

Whereas it's true I won on my first Sid attempt but in order to reach such a "technical" level (reading countless strategy articles on the forums, learning the AI behaviour patterns etc..) took me a couple of years.

With Smac you can win on Transcend within the same month of learning the game playing casually. With Civ III I doubt anyone can win on that level within the same month of learning the game playing casually (not 14 hours a day). It's nigh impossible.

Another way to handle the wonder cascade is to trade Lit away when you are pretty sure the other civs will start it in other cities. The AI doesn't seem to switch things - they will still have their other city try to build the GL, and switch the wonder they tried to an expensive colleseum or something.

That's a more dangerous way of doing things, of course.
