Technical Support Help

Play the World will not install. I have contacted Infogrames with my problem and they came back with a long list of things to do. This is the status of my drive:

I have cleaned the CD, deleted all the files in the Temp folder, disabled all unnecessary programs, and changed the Primary IDE Channel (and secondary) transfer mode changed from DMA to PIO in the ATA/ATAPI Controllers.

I've pinpointed the problem to be in these two areas:

If the cdrom says "ATAPI CD-Rom", then this is the problem. This
indicates that Windows cannot properly query information from the CDRom drive, either because it is damaged, has old or poorly written firmware.

Windows only uses a single type of software to control cdrom drives,
and that software only changes depending on what version of Windows you're
using, whether its Windows 98, 2000, or another version. As a result,
the firmware on the CDRom drive is usually the first thing to look at in
these circumstances.

Whether or not your CDRom drive lists as ATAPI, you'll want to contact
the hardware manufacturer for a firmware update. This will usually correct
small incompatibilities, improve the way the cdrom drive reads, and generally help correct your problem.

My cdrom says "ATAPI CD-rom" but I fail to see the problem. It advises you to update the firmware, but where can I find that? Microsoft is the hardware manufactor.

This procedure allows your Installshield, a component of Windows, to
reinstall itself. Since a corruption or bug in this software can
prevent your game from installing it, deleting it can often correct install
problems.

You can do this by deleting the folder C:\Program Files\Common
Files\InstallShield\Engine\6\Intel 32. This will allow the Install
program to reinstall the InstallShield Engine and allow the rest of the program to install.

I have deleted the Intel 32 folder, yet I still continue to get the "Component Transfer Error". It stops at 7%, 8%, or 10% on installition and exits, leaving me with dead weight - and a waste of $16. Can someone help, or am I stuck with trying to contact Infogrames Tech Support again?

I'm running XP Home Edition...I should reinstall that?

Have you tried the compatibility settings? I'm not sure if Home has this function or not, I know Pro does.

Open an WinExplorers window, Right click on your CDRom drive, and click "Explore."

Find the install program, and right click on it, selecting properties, and click on the Compatibility Tab. You can then tell XP to run this program as if the OS was a different version of Windows.

ATAPI is an industry standard, and I have all kinds of computers here at work that use ATAPI CDROM drives, and they all work fine.

I have an ATAPI CD burner, a DVD (Doesn't work, but it didn't work under Win98SE), and a ZIP drive on the ATAPI that work just fine.

So I suppose I should ask, where did you get your first quote, and how do they mean, if it says Atapi drive? That's kinda vague. It could say it on the CDROM, it could say it somewhere in windows. . .

And, my favorite question, do you have another computer you could attempt to install PTW on? That would tell you real quick if it's your PC or the CD.

A couple. I had Civ3 on one computer from June to October until my mom bought me my own computer and banished me from hers. It's still installed - I'll try and post the results.

Good luck! Tell her it's for 'testing purposes.' Yeah, that'll work! Didn't work on my parents, and when my kids try to pull it on me it won't work then either.

ARRGH!

It worked on the office computer (a bit slow, but it went through in the end) but it STILL WON'T WORK ON MINE!!

The setup program has installed the rest of the games fine before under XP, so I see no reason why it shouldn't work on this game. I changed it anyway.

The quotes were pulled directly from the tech support letter I received when I asked Infogrames.

I'll try running setup under the 98/ME compatibility thingy.

It's even worse in the 98/ME mode because it (argh) doesn't detect what I guess to be DirectX 9 on my computer. It tells me to install so I say ok, install it. Right after that nothing happens

I dunno. . . I'm stumped. Maybe it's XP Home. From what I understand, XPHome has some, well, issues.

So I should get professional?

I would, but it's at least a $99 upgrade. Pro is just better in my option.

But if you can get Home to work, that's cool, too.

Lucky Dragon said that the problem is the copy-protection scheme so she recommended that I burn a copy of PTW to bypass the copy-protection. And it worked! :) Now I stow away the burned copy and use the regular PTW CD to play! :D
