I used to think that the Internet was mostly useless, for two reasons:
1. I had misread and thought that it gave you two techs known by other civs. I thought this was just silly
2. After I reread, I thought that it only gave you the techs that two known civilizations knew at that exact point in the game when you completed the internet.
Edit: removed paragraph which had a wrong interpretation of internet from here.

Edit2: in removing the noob paragraph, I forgot to remention: both my first two assumptions about the internet, that I've detailed in the above points, were false.
I have found it useful even in noble, and I definitely find it more useful in my current prince attempts. The point is, I always have a tech lead until late renaissance, but after that, it's virtually impossible to stay completely ahead. You have to choose techs you'll grab and techs you'll accept other civs to grab before you. It helps to have the internet, because the better you want to play, the more you have to give up on certain technologies that you still need/want, and then the internet gives you the techs you had to miss in order to research the techs you wanted.
