IO3 - All of Rome's Cities are Mighty!

More thoughts about upcoming turnset
1. Settler for our 4 food resource GP farm
2. More galleys
3. Fogbusting
4. Maybe get the mids going. Where would we want them built? Which town has a lot of potential chopping?

Well, he didn't seem to willing when I tried to see what he'd trade masonry to us for...

But the only thing he was willing to give up was masonry, and all we had over him was Math. Bad trade in my view, didn't do it.

However, since Justy doesn't have Math, he won't have construction for a while... right? Maybe we could throw some catapults at him too?

Got it. Will post thoughts before playing, and will play tomorrow.

Not bad, just move the two warriors and chariots in Zara's former core down south to fog bust or we might have a return of a certain Hun on our hands. Also units heal quciker in a city than outside. Just two small points to notice.
On Justinian, he's been steadily growing his power so he wont be the pushover he was when we were going after Zara (if he had someone like Shanka instead of Lincoln he'd be dead by now).
On the GG either medic up a warrior or settle him in Rome (our best military pump atm). I have no preference on either (but that what I do with my first two).
On the tech front, I like either Col, Aesth, Lit (for GLib and two nat wonders) then Masonry and Const. or Masonry, Const, CoL, then Aesth and Lit. The general consensus is to try for Pyramid failure money, and hope Justinian builds it so masonry first may be the preferred option.
When we do get literature, where'll we place the Heroic epic. Rome is turning out 3 turn Praets, and with a bit of MM we can get two here, Antium need the Maoi (probably start this turnset), Caligulum can get Praets in 7 and Calix will be on a similar number.
The national epic is a no brainer, get the GP farm up, whip library, and forge if we can get it (conquest booty off Just. if we go soon maybe, other wise we'll have to insert it in the queue), then build the Nat epic.

Tech trading: maybe we should gift Linc myst (no actuall don't no modifiers), but trying to get him happy could result in some nice techs falling our way. If we don't war with Just. a maths masonry trade will give a +1. So our best bet to open good trades (outside of taking them by the gladius) is to go Brothers of the faith with them two.
I've just had a crazy thought how about making Islam a major force in the game? Would be nice to see for once.

Lol at the idea of major force Islam...

I just realized, we have no lurkers. Where are you, lurkers? I want vindication!

Yeah, no. although it does kinda feel lonely when no lurkers post.

The other forum I hang around, the developer forums for Football Manager, actually show you what members and how many guests are viewing the same thread as you, so you know if people are looking at you even if they are being quiet about it.
Maybe the lurkers are stunned at our brilliant game play and decided not to respond in terror that we show them up with our comebacks (yes thats it:crazyeye:)

Anyway opened up the game again, looked around and I got:
Spoiler :

Happy April's fools.

You know... that's a great idea for the next sg we could do. Prince level (let's move up one); fractal; play as Saladin or Mehmet and the only religion we may have is Islam. Either we find it ourselves or we get it from someone else asap.

Same people too? I like it...

If we do it, though, be Sally. Because CAs are awesome.

I might actually start playing a game like that right now on my own, and figure out the variants that would make Islam the focus in a game.

Anyway I won't hijack this our SG thread to discuss another potential game, not cool of me

Hey guys. I was intending to play this game tonight (it's 10:17PM here), but unfortunately I am too busy and won't be able to play properly until tomorrow night. If you guys want to go on ahead, go right ahead and skip me for a turn.

Silent, you are in my timezone. And I can wait a day... Don't you know the 24-48 rule? You can go up to two days before even posting that you need more time, I think. And even with the delay, you're still within your limit.

Just a heads up here, and not a hurry-up plea, but if I dont see the game by 10 a.m. tomorrow GMT (20 hours time), then I won't be able to get to the next turnset, as I'll be going home for a bit of Easter painting.

Based on looking at the save and reading the comments it seems the tasks for this turnset are:

-figure out what to do with GG
-settle GPF city
-tech Masonry, and start the Pyramids
-tech HBR and Construction
-finish some galleys and send them and healed Praets up towards Justin
-spawnbust our lower tundra land

HBR can finish in 3 turns
Masonry can finish in 1 turn (if tiles aligned properly)
Construction would take 6 after that.
They can all be finished in my turnset, and since Masonry is only 1 turn, I don't think we should trade math for it.

If we put the GG in our next best hammer city we can have two cities spitting out Praets with 2 initial promos, instead of Rome making 7/10 XP units. We could also use it as a medic. Personally, I think I'd settle it in Antium.

Will play in a few hours to give time for quick feedback.

I agree with everything you say, but the galleys, methinks, are very important. Just remember, as I'm sure you already know, that we won't need that many. Maybe just a few, considering how close our land is to Justy's...

Settled GG in another production city I agree completely :goodjob: Would love to have CRII Praets available right off the bat.

Your plan of action sounds good Silent. Have fun with it :)

On a complete side note, I'll also be out for the Easter weekend. I'm leaving Friday 10am est and won't be back til Tues early morning. Should my set come up, please skip/swap me, whatever works best. With me and Brian both out, I completely expect you two have this game won

Also on a complete other side note, I'm trying out a pure Islam game with Saladin, using only settled great prophets and GGs (all other GPs I disband!) and only prophet specialist game trying to win by converting everyone to Islam either through diplomacy or by the sword (Islamic vassals). So far it's possible (in the Middle ages) on Prince, definitely offers a challenge. Again not hijacking thread, just food for thought for the future

Alright guys. It took me a little longer than I thought, but it is done.

T=119: traded Myst to Lincoln for 40g; whipped galley in Cumae
T=120: Masonry researched, start Construction; Settler finished in Rome, start 'Mids; galley finished in Cumae, start granary; galley finished in Caligulum, start chariot; monument finished in Glacialis Ferra, start granary; monument finished in Calx Cuprum, start granary
T=121: borders of Caligulum expand; chariot finished in Caligulum, start Praet; galley finished in Antium, start galley; Confucianism spreads to Antium
T=122: borders of Cumae expand; GG settled in Antium; whipped a galley in Antium
T=123: Praet finished in Caligulum, start wealth; galley finished in Antium, start archer; Magni Cives is founded and starts a granary
T=124: Archer finished in Antium, start Praet
T=125: just a bunch of worker movements
T=126: granary finished in Glacialis Ferra, start barracks
T=127: Caligulum switches production to a forum
T=128: Construction researched, start Horseback Riding; granary finished in Cumae, start settler; granary finished in Calx Cuprum, start barracks; whipped monument in Magni Cives
T=129: borders of Antium expand; monument finished in Magni Cives, start granary
T=130: borders of Glacialis Ferra and Calx Cuprum expand; Praet finished in Antium, start galley; Confucianism spreads to Magni Cives

The Temple of Artemis was built in between turns 128 and 129 in a "distant land."

The Pyramids have 229/500 hammers into them, and stone was just hooked up and the 'Mids should be finished in 6 turns.

Also note: while most of the southern tundra is spawn busted (we need one more unit to do it fully) a barb sword has just spawned. A couple of forests next to Magni Cives (which means Great People/Citizens in Latin) are pre-chopped and roaded to be chopped into a forum.

We have several galleys (4 I believe with 1 coming), one of which is carrying a spy over to Justin before the invasion. Most of the Praets are either on galleys or heading up to the top of that peninsula to be quickly transported over. Last time I saw Constantinople it had 3 troops in it and our Power is still much higher than his.

I saw we use our spy to see what he has in his city, then steal whatever tech we can right before we invade.

As usual here is the more detailed (with pictures!) account of the turnset:
Spoiler :

I traded Mysticism to Lincoln for his 40 gold, just to get something for it and to allow us to deficit research another turn or two.

Our first navel vessel was trained in Caligulum. More would follow from different places throughout our empire.

Barbarian forces were pressing into our territories, but our swift charioteers pushed them back into the wilderness from which they came.

Shortly after that Confusionism spread to Antium and although our people were excited, our leaders did not adopt the religion as a national religion at that point since happiness in that city were not needed and the change would lead to a turn of unproductive chaos.

Barbarians continued to pour out of the southern wilderness, but our charioteers kept pushing them further and further back.

The wonder-full city of Constantinople at this time was guarded by only two archers and an axeman.

We also found the Confusionistic holy city of Thessalonica, which was defended by 2 archers.

Here's a picture of Justin's cities. You can just see a few of our galleys in the bottom of the screenshot.

EDIT: Sorry, just noticed I forgot to resize the pictures for better viewing. Will make sure to do that next time.

Awesome build up set Silent. Looks like you discovered a talent you didn't realize you possessed :goodjob: I would say war plan would be:

1. Spy on Justin ASAP for a tech steal. But before that I say have it scout Justin's interior. Need to see how many cities for this invasion. This can also determine if we just want his cap or do we proceed to making the Byzantine's extinct :hammer:
2. In one playing turn we can have Praets land 1SE of Istanbul not Constantinople if our galleys have two moves available waiting 2N of our northern most rice. That means we can expect maybe 4 or 5 defenders by the time we land. We keep the city.
3. Next should be Thessalonica. Not a great holy city for future Wall Street investment, but a holy city is a holy city. I'm indifferent to razing it or keeping it. 1 cow, all plains, off river, city destined for mediocrity at best til biology.
4. Nicaea looks like trash from the current screen shot. Raze it.

My general thoughts.
I'm glad to see chariots having a positive impact for us. Again fully fogbusting our continent will be a huge headache we will not have to worry about. Allows us to focus settling/establishing on Justin's land if his lands aren't that bad. Though his power rating could also be due to the fact he doesn't have great land to settle and thus have maybe around 4 cities.

Judging from minimap, Magnus Cives is our GP farm? Great to see that squared away. With 4 food tiles and caste system, we could see 6-7 specialists running and doing all our research. Finally we'll be able to live up to our variant :D

Lincoln must have decent land if he's leading us... Three more AIs to find I guess.

I'm torn between finishing off Mids, or letting it linger and get max failure cash. Who knows, I've played too many games where I eventually built them or someone built them in AD.

Potential teching post HBR: beeline to Lit so we can build ourselves the GLib. With marble it's very cheap to build. Any available forests near Magnus should be saved for GLib chopping. Then post Lit it will be interesting. Beeling towards optics, or content ourselves taking the path toward civil service so we can run more specialists. I say the latter, since it will provide more useful military units along the way and we could use them to take out Lincoln and be well set-up for a domination win. Plus this will provide more specialists with extra farms in many cities, and enhance our hammer cities even more. Finally this does set us up on the path towards Lib, or if we want to fulfill our destiny go for Divine Right and found Islam

Anyway, side note, the hotel my girlfriend and I are staying in DC is amazing. King size bed, very swanky, yet couldn't believe the deal we got for it. We definitely are underdressed for this establishment. The rich tourists must be like who the hell are these two lesser humans

You know, you are unfair, FGJ. You're in a great hotel with your girlfriend? I'm jealous...

Also, if you want to know how many cities Justy has, just run the game in BUG Mod. It tells you on the side of the screen.

Ah my friend I don't have BUG on me since I'm on vacation  But good to know, I've always wondered what that number meant beside that red fist
