Iron/Mithril/Bronze generation and mines

I had some questions as to how exactly resources are triggered as randomly appearing. It seems in some games that I've played areas that didn't have resources the turn before suddenly randomly spawn resources, these mostly being spots with mines on them. So in a recent game, I've built mines on pretty much all the hills, even ones not being used by a city but still within cultural barriers to see if they'd spawn resources. Oddly enough though, I haven't had a SINGLE bronze/iron/mithril/gem/gold/anything spawn in something like a 14 city area, probably about 50 different potential spots that could spawn resources. None of the neighboring civilizations has had this kind of "luck" or whatever, so I was wondering what the mechanics were behind spawning additional resources? It doesn't seem like they just appear or don't appear when the appropriate tech is discovered in FFH2 like in the un-modded game.

Do spots need to not have mines on them when discovering the new tech? Do mines need to be on every spot for the random chance to happen? What are the mechanics behind this? Looked around for a while and couldn't find anything, it'd definately make this Immortal level game a lot easier if I had the resources to go to war effectively instead of just relying on Balseraph's culture generation to eventually flip cities of week civs.

Most likely you had some Earth mana from your Palace in the first game. Earth Mana grants a chance for each Mine to discover a resource (if it isn't on one already). The effect is cumulative, so the more Earth Mana you have, the faster you find resources.

in vanilla, finding ressources through mines was about 1 chance on 5000, now FfH base is 1 chance on 10000; with 1 earth mana it increases to 5/10000 (2.5times as much as in vanilla) and +5/10000 per erth mana.

then it means : chance*mine number is the chance to get new ressource per turn !!

they must have changed the math.

iirc correctly the base value was 1/10k

with earth mana its 1/ (10k / 1+{number of earth nodes})

so your looking at ....
1 = 1/5k
2 = 1/3k
3 = 1/2.5k

Do spots need to not have mines on them when discovering the new tech

AFAIK the mechanism is following.
There are resources which are placed on the map from the very beginning but you do not see them until according tech is discovered. You can see them from the worldbuilder (press control-W). Then each turn of each mine worked there is a small chance for one resource to arise on the tile with this mine. Chance is modifid by your control on the Earth mana (see comments above). Again if you still have no necessary tech you do not see it. Discovering tech just reveal hidden resources.

oups..
your right daladinn.

Thanks for the help guys! :D

After hearing about how Earth Mana was probably the result of my initial "luck", I played a game with the dwarves and just for fun hoarded as many of them as I possibly could. By the end of the game I had 8 of them, and more spots *had* resources than didn't... my economy was almost nothing but gold / gem mines! :D Haha, fun.

ype, as khazad, with no mage possible, hoarding earth mana nodes can be a real investment.
but keep in mind the passive boni of each mana ;)

Yes, having Earth mana is a prerequisite it seems to getting mine gifts. I have only very rarely received those gifts without Earth mana.

I did exactly like you did in v .23. I built mines everywhere (the only gifts seemed to come to mines in city borders though). However, in .25 those annoying mine explosion/poisoning, etc. events keep appearing when you have a lot of mines. Hell, I've had only a couple of mines and received that event an awful lot.

Yeah, sometimes I have one mine that will catch the mine disease and gets hit over and over, every 20 turns or so. It is usually the one nearest the capital. (Hmmm. Maybe that's where the prairie dogs are getting their gold?)

The chance to spawn new resources is only checked for mines currently being worked, so, building mines outside of your city fat cross/having lots of unworked mines does not increase the chances of resource spawn.

I totally know this is incorrect. I've had plenty of gems spawn outside of areas I had cities.
