Iron need to create decent early units removed?

Yes, though it seems you're mostly intent to remove any sort of complexity or difficulty from the game. Maybe you'd be better served by tweaking difficulty levels so there could be something between Prince and whatever's beneath it? Also, didn't they just buff spearmen and pikemen in the last patch, so swords aren't so vital and dominant anymore?
 
Happiness and Strategic Resources are not "aberrations". They're the core of the game, the things that prevent a player from just rolling over the AI with ease. If you want to see what a game looks like without either of those, well go look at Civs 1-3.

Learn to play the game. Once you do that, then it's fine to make minor tweaks as you go if the balance feels a bit off, but changing early units to not use Iron is not "minor" by any definition. You can also try altering the game's starting settings a bit; if you think there's just not enough units of Iron in the world, try playing a game on the Abundant resource setting, where deposits will be ~50% larger. Or change the terrain distribution to favor terrains that have Iron...

It would be like removing the need for copper and iron for early game units in CivIV. :rolleyes:

It is odd how many people get hung up on how powerful iron is. Ironically, this is probably one of the more realistic changes given how often in the Iron Ages nations with iron completely dominated nations without.
 
Strategic ressources in Civ4 were less rare and the bone of the game was different: at the end there was no more empty land, and as you would have up to have this land anyway, it was not a hit. Now with unhappiness growing, founding a city solely for iron, far of your capital, is a hit... when you find any.

I wouldn't mind at all to see dominating civilizations as far as the game system allows it: now if you're conquered, you lose, period, nothing more happens. I wouldn't mind to see dominating civs if the fact we lose a war wouldn't hurt the game so badly. (= Game Over)

There was no strategic ressources in Civ1 and 2, and i don't remind that the game was that different or less fun to play. (on contrary)
